Testimonials

We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again.

Olivia and Andrew Clark, Hornsby, NSW

I noticed that some of the tiles in my bathroom walls were loose and the grout was coming off. I am a very busy so kept on postponing calling someone to fix it. One day I got home and the loose tiles were lying broken on the floor. Can you imagine my frustration? I rang my brother in panic and he gave me Tile Cleaners' contact details. I rang them straight away. The guys told me I needed a tiler and professional regrouting work done so I thought it would take ages to fix my problem. However they organized the work very well. I had my tiles fixed on Friday night the same week and the entire bathroom regrouted on Saturday. Thank you some much for your quick help; it was such a relief.

Kerry McMyre, Mosman, NSW

My mother's tiles were old and ugly, as she has been living in the same house her entire life without ever really taking care of her tiles. I called Tile Cleaners to get advice on what to do with them. They came to her house the next day to have a look at my mum's tiles. I am very satisfied with how patient and highly professional you were with my mother. I am sorry I couldn't be there when you arrived, and I am really impressed by how you managed to explain everything to my mom and help her out. Thank you for doing a great job.

What is Granite?

Granite is essentially molten lava that never rose above the surface of the earth. Granite is a very hard natural stone denser than marble. A geologist will tell you that it is an igneous or metamorphic rock that is highly saturated with silica. Granite has a rating of 7 on the Mohs scale, which determines a materials' hardness. Diamond has a rating of 10. Suffice it to say there are not too many things that will easily scratch granite.

Granite delivers breathtaking beauty unmatched by synthetic materials and a very high level of durability. Granite is used in many roles around the house, from flooring, stair treads and countertops to wall coverings and beautiful sinks and basins. Granite is a preferred material, due to its extremely high quality, it's easiness to clean and its ability to add to the value of your home while adding depth and character to your surroundings.

Granite Absorbency Test

To find out if your granite requires sealing try a simple water patch test. Leave a few drops of water on an inconspicuous part of the granite for 10-15 minutes then wipe with a clean cloth, if the water darkens the stone it means that you will need to have it sealed, making your granite stain resistant. You can complete the same test with mineral oil if you wish to really make sure stains wont be absorbed. If it does darken the granite don't worry, as mineral oil will completely evaporate returning the stone to its natural colour. What this will tell you is you may need a stronger sealer for your variety of granite.

This test will work for granite and all other stone. A honed or polished surface will tighten the pores in the tile and lower absorbency. In short, if granite darkens with any material water or oil then you require a premium sealer.

Granite Sealing Process

Whether you have just had your granite laid or it has been down for years, Tile Cleaners® experienced technicians provide Australia's leading service in the sealing and protection of your stone. Not all granite is created equally, some will absorb liquids and some wont, hence wont require sealing. If a stone cannot absorb anything it wont absorb sealer. The good news with this situation is if the granite won't absorb sealer, stains wont penetrate it either. If you seal a stone that doesn't need sealing you will be left with a hazy, flaking finish.

Initially our specialists will assess whether your granite needs sealing and/or whether it needs stripping. Stripping may need to be done before a new sealer is applied. A thorough clean will be carried out before the sealing process begins as whatever is on the surface once sealed, will be sealed in.

For granite we would recommend 2- 3 coats with an impregnating penetrating sealer. A cheaper option is a topical sealer if you wish but it may create a slippery finish and can be dangerous especially in wet areas like around swimming pools.

Two main sealing options exist for granite tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer will protect your granite from water and oil based stains by chemically bonding with the surface pores leaving a long lasting, breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer results in easier regular cleaning while protecting your granite surface and grout from absorbing stains for up to 15 years. Tile Cleaners® are proud to be accredited applicators of Australia's Deepshield&trade Gold based on the latest fluoro-bond technology and specifically engineered for denser surfaces. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pore structure of your granite and once cured, will not alter the appearance of your granite tile or stone.

Tile Cleaners® technicians are experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your granite looks its absolute best. Our technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealers can also helpful in situations where your old solvent based sealer can't be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealers usually have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

You can easily test how porous your granite is by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how the water is absorbed. You can then see how any type of water based stain can be absorbed by your granite tile surface and grout.

How often should Granite be sealed?

If your granite does need sealing the question often asked is how often should I reseal it? The easiest answer is when your granite no longer repels liquids. When this starts to occur it means you need to re-apply the original sealer (not coat over the existing!). Any premium penetrating sealer should last between 5 - 15 years depending on maintenance. Many assume once granite is sealed then the work is done but a certain amount of up keep is necessary to make sure it continues to resist stains.

The need for sealing granite regularly is a myth, designed to prey on the insecurities of uninformed homeowners. Our quality products will only need stripping and resealing every 10-15 years.

Our Granite Sealers

Tile Cleaners® products provide eco-friendly solutions to by providing protection for your granite without harsh chemicals. We have two options when it comes to sealing, a topical sealer and a penetrating sealer.

deepshield moisture granite

Our Penetrating Impregnating Sealer is designed to absorb into the surface of the granite. There is no trace of the sealer as the tile is left with the natural finish it had originally. This below the surface filler has the primary function of reducing absorbency without affecting the slip resistance of the stone. This sealer doesn't show wear like other cheaper surface sealers and has a much longer lifetime. It will typically require 2 coats.

deepshield generic granite

Our Topical based sealer provides a surface seal that leaves your granite with an altered appearance. It can be a dangerous option for wet areas as it can become slippery. This sealer requires more regular application as it has a shorter lifetime. You will physically see when it needs to be reapplied, as it will flake and peel. This will provide a more unnatural look for you granite.

It is common with stones such as bluestone and slate to use a solvent-based sealer which has been used to seal them previously. For newly laid bluestone this isn't recommended due to its harsh chemical compounds. But if a solvent sealer exists it will need more care and different types of products to strip and reseal. The new seal will also have to be solvent so it adheres to any left over solvent after stripping. If a water-based sealer is applied over a solvent, the finish may cause negative reactions and end in a poor result.

Granite Sealer Care

Your sealer will last you a long time if you take care of it properly. Maintenance doesn't need to be a chore. It is a simple process that will add years to the lifetime of your sealer and granite alike.

If you are having new granite laid always ask the manufacturer what they recommend as they will know best. Keep your mops and cloths clean and rinse them regularly in warm water throughout the cleaning process. Never leave any residue left on your granite as it will react with the sealer and reduce its effectiveness.

Granite doesn't need to cost you a fortune in upkeep if you take a bit of time to look after it regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

When we talk about a "sealer," we are referring to a liquid or carrier that contains a resin. This substance is applied to porous surfaces, whether they are natural stone or man-made materials. The primary function of a sealer is to provide protection against staining caused by water and/or oil-based materials. By applying the sealer, you can prevent these substances from penetrating and staining the surface. Additionally, a sealer can enhance the overall cleaning results by making it easier to clean and maintain the surfaces effectively.

Sealing granite tiles is crucial as it serves the purpose of preventing liquids and dirt particles from penetrating the surface. Unlike polishes, sealers are specifically formulated to create a barrier that safeguards the granite surfaces. It is recommended to seal porous granite tiles after installation, and this initial seal can provide protection for up to 15 years, contingent upon the quality of the sealer used and the level of regular wear and exposure. To ensure the preservation of your granite tiles and prevent any accidental damage, it is advisable to contact us promptly after installation so that we can provide the necessary protection.

To determine if your granite floors require sealing, there are a few key signs to observe. If your granite floors start to appear dull or lose their shine, even after regular cleaning, it may indicate the need for stripping, cleaning, and resealing. Additionally, if you notice that your granite tiles are becoming easily stained, it suggests that the previous sealer has worn off, necessitating immediate resealing to prevent permanent staining. Monitoring these visual cues and taking prompt action can help maintain the quality and longevity of your granite floors.

Our sealing products exclusively consist of water-based formulas, avoiding the use of solvent-based sealers unless absolutely necessary. Applying the sealer will not alter the texture of your granite tiles in any manner. Instead, its primary function is to provide protection against staining while preserving the desired lustrous finish that you seek for your granite surfaces.

Absolutely, we provide color enhancing services specifically designed for travertine. The color enhancement process involves the application of a specialized compound that enriches and intensifies the natural appearance of the travertine. By applying the color enhancer, the tiles' tones and hues are deepened, bringing out the inherent beauty of the travertine material. This treatment imparts a subtle wet or low sheen finish, enhancing the overall visual appeal of your travertine surfaces. Our color enhancing services are aimed at highlighting the unique characteristics and enhancing the aesthetics of your travertine.

When our professional team arrives to seal your granite floors, they will provide a detailed explanation of the job processes, ensuring complete transparency. The process begins with stripping any previous sealer, if present, followed by a thorough cleaning and neutralization of the granite surface. This step is crucial to remove dust, residue, and any other substances that could impact the effectiveness of the new sealer. Subsequently, a fresh sealer is applied to the dry granite and allowed to set. The outcome of this process is revitalized granite that not only looks new but also gains enhanced protection. Additionally, the sealed granite surfaces become easier to maintain, contributing to their long-term durability and appearance.

The duration to reseal granite floors can vary based on the size of the area being sealed. In most cases, the process typically takes around 4 to 8 hours to complete. Our team is committed to completing both the cleaning and resealing tasks on the same day, eliminating the need for multiple appointments and ensuring convenience for our clients.

After the resealing process, the drying time for granite tiles depends on the type of sealer used. Penetrating sealers typically become touch dry within 4 hours, while it takes approximately 24 hours for the sealer to fully cure. Once the sealer has fully cured, it is safe to place furniture and other objects back onto the tiles and grout. It is important to avoid getting the surfaces wet for at least 24 hours to allow proper curing. In the case of topical sealers, they generally require around 48 hours to fully cure before normal activities can resume. These drying times ensure the optimal effectiveness and longevity of the sealant on your granite tiles.

The lifespan of a sealer before reapplication is influenced by the type of sealer used. Topical sealers typically provide protection for approximately 3 years before requiring reapplication. In contrast, impregnating sealers are more durable and can last up to 15 years or even a lifetime when applied to vertical surfaces. However, areas with high foot traffic or frequent use may necessitate more frequent inspections and resealing to ensure ongoing protection. Conducting a water absorption test can help assess the porosity of the surface and aid in selecting a sealer with longer-lasting durability. It is advisable to refer to the guidelines provided by the manufacturer and consult professionals to determine the specific reapplication schedule suitable for your tiles and grout.

When using Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer, the slipperiness of your granite tile surface remains unaffected. This is because the sealer penetrates the top layer, specifically the surface pores of the granite. However, it's worth noting that applying a Topical Sealer may potentially make your granite floors slippery when they are wet. To preserve both the appearance and slip resistance of your granite surfaces and prevent moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is advisable to seal them with a high-quality, invisible, and fully breathable impregnating sealer. This ensures the optimal protection and maintenance of your granite floors.

To maintain the fresh appearance of your sealed granite tiles, Tile Cleaners® suggests the following steps. Regularly clean the tiles and grout on a weekly basis using a mild detergent to remove dirt and grime. It is important to avoid using strong detergents with high acidity or alkalinity, as they may potentially affect the sealer. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances for cleaning. Our top recommendation for protecting your granite tiles is to seal them with one of our highest quality sealers. Sealing provides the best possible protection against staining and helps maintain the pristine condition of your granite tiles.

The purpose of stripping granite surfaces is to ensure that they are thoroughly cleaned and to remove as much of the old sealer as possible. By doing so, you can achieve the cleanest and most visually appealing results for your granite floors. After the stripping process, the cleaning procedure is carried out, followed by the application of a new sealer. This comprehensive process guarantees that your granite floors will appear fresh, clean, and rejuvenated once our professional team completes the job.

The process of stripping and sealing granite tiles involves removing the existing coating or sealer from the surface of the granite floor before applying a new sealant. Over time, granite flooring can become dull and lose its luster, which can negatively impact the overall aesthetics of the home. By undergoing the stripping and sealing process, you have the opportunity to restore the beautiful and radiant appearance of your granite tiles, effectively rejuvenating the flooring. This approach can save you the expense of replacing the entire flooring and instead breathe new life into your existing granite tiles.

When our professional team arrives to reseal your granite floors, they will provide a comprehensive explanation of the job processes, ensuring complete clarity about the procedures involved. The process begins with stripping any previous sealer that may have been applied. Next, the granite floor is meticulously cleaned and neutralized to remove any dust, residue, or other elements that could impact the effectiveness of the new sealer. Once the surface is dry, a fresh sealer is applied and allowed to set. The outcome of this process is a rejuvenated granite floor that not only looks new but is also protected, making it easier to maintain in the long run.

The frequency of sealing granite floors varies based on the type of sealer used and the level of foot traffic they experience. The Deepshield® range of impregnating water-based sealers in Australia, particularly Deepshield Gold® designed for denser surfaces like granite, can offer long-lasting protection for up to 15 years. In contrast, topical sealers generally have a lifespan of around 3 years. However, the actual duration may be influenced by factors such as high foot traffic or severe weather conditions for outdoor tiles, which could necessitate more frequent resealing. Additionally, the condition of the tiles themselves is a significant factor. If you notice patchy areas or easy staining, it may indicate the need for resealing. Feel free to reach out to us for further assistance with any inquiries related to sealing your granite tiles.

If granite floors are left unsealed, they can be susceptible to various issues. Due to their porous nature, spills of oily or harsh substances can seep into the granite tiles and penetrate their pores, resulting in permanent staining that cannot be effectively removed through regular domestic cleaning methods. To preserve the natural look and feel of your granite tiles and safeguard them against permanent staining, we strongly recommend sealing them. Sealing provides a protective barrier that prevents spills from penetrating the surface, keeping your granite floors looking their best for an extended period. Furthermore, sealed granite floors are easier to maintain, offering convenience in their upkeep and ensuring their long-term durability.

The ideal moment to seal your granite floors is right after their installation, as this helps prevent any potential accidental staining or damage. If you observe patchy sealed areas on your granite tiles or notice that they are becoming more prone to staining, these are clear indications that your granite floors are in need of sealing. By addressing these signs promptly, you can ensure the long-term protection and beauty of your granite floors.

When it comes to sealing granite tiles, Tile Cleaners® follow a pricing structure based on the square meter measurement of each separate room. You can find a detailed price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for your reference. Before commencing the work, our team will measure each room individually, discuss the scope of the project, and provide you with a clear confirmation of the work to be carried out as well as the associated costs. This ensures transparency and allows you to have a comprehensive understanding of the pricing for sealing your granite tiles.

To accurately measure the size of a granite area, it is recommended to measure each area individually. The most straightforward method is to multiply the width of the area by its length. For instance, if a room measures 3 meters in length and 2 meters in width, the total area would be calculated as 3 multiplied by 2, resulting in a total of 6 square meters. By measuring each granite area separately and calculating the total square meters, you can ensure precise measurements for accurate pricing and planning purposes.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

To prepare for the cleaning of your granite surfaces, it is recommended to move all furniture and items off the floor. This allows the cleaning team to have unobstructed access to the granite surfaces and ensures that the area is ready for their arrival. By clearing the floor of furniture and items, you can facilitate a smooth and efficient cleaning process for your granite surfaces.
