Originally ceramic tiles were handmade, thus each was a work of art in its own right. Today of course most ceramic tiles are automatically manufactured in mass quantities and are relatively low in price compared to other types of tiles.
Ceramic tile is categorised in different ways. At the most basic level, tiles come either glazed or unglazed. With unglazed tile, the colour runs throughout the tile body. The colour can be the natural earth tone of the clay itself, or the colour of a pigment that has been added to it before firing. Glazed tiles, on the other hand, have colour which has been added to the surface of the tile. The colour is applied to the tile after firing. The tile is then fired again to bond the glaze to the clay body. Glazed tiles range from a high gloss to a dull matte finish, and come in a much wider range of colours, patterns and surface textures.

We often get asked to recommend a sealer for ceramic tiles, the simple answer is if they are glazed then the tiles usually don't require sealing, but the grout lines should always be sealed with a water based impregnating penetrating sealer, however if your ceramic tiles are porous then we recommend you seal the tiles with a high quality water based sealer such as Australian Deepshield™ Penetrating Impregnating Sealer.
Certain varieties of ceramic tile will require an impregnating sealer to fill the micro pores on the tile surface. Glazed Ceramic Tiles are Easy to Maintain, however the grout lines should always be sealed to protect from discolouration as well as ensure they are easy to maintain
For white or light coloured grout or for particularly tough mold or mildew stains, consider bleach. You can purchase a bleach-based cleaner or mix a 50/50 solution of bleach and water to clean stubborn grout stains.
When using bleach or bleach-based cleaners, be sure to have proper ventilation to remove harmful fumes. Also, be sure to wear gloves and older clothing. Never mixed bleach-based cleaners with other substances; toxic fumes can be generated from these types of mixtures. Ensure all bleach is properly rinsed.
Another alternative grout cleaning solution is hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is an effective grout cleaner that doesn't produce odours. As an added benefit, hydrogen peroxide is the perfect cleaner for those with allergies or sensitivities to harsh chemicals. Simply apply some hydrogen peroxide to your grout and allow it to sit for several minutes. Brush the treated grout and then rinse with a damp cloth or mop.
