What is Travertine?

Travertine Tile Travertine flooring is a very stylish material that is functional and aesthetically attractive while bringing a very appealing, old-world character to any home or business. Travertine will often appear fibrous or concentric and can come in a white, tan or a cream like colour.

Travertine is formed in mineral springs, especially around hot springs, underground rivers and in limestone caves. Travertine is different to limestone(sedimentary) and marble(metamorphic) with the main characteristic of travertine being the holes within the stone created as a result of gases escaping as the travertine is formed. The resulting stone is a smooth and very hard substance further characterised by its porous surface.

Extensive deposits of travertine exist at Tivoli, near Rome, which is where the stone receives its name. Tivoli was known as Tibur in ancient Roman times. The ancient name for the stone was lapis tiburtinus meaning tibur stone, which has evolved to travertine.

By the time travertine is quarried it is naturally beautiful - a smooth, dense stone that exhibits a notable creamy colour that evokes a certain old-world refinement.

Cleaning Travertine Stone Tiles

Types of sealer's used on travertine tiles

Water based sealer's and solvent-based sealer's can both be used on travertine, however unless absolutely required for a specific reason, we always recommend applying a water based sealer that doesn't produce harmful fumes during application and removal. Water based sealers are easier to apply and remove and also require less drying time. One of the most popular product ranges available is Australian made Deepshield™ quality impregnating water based sealer's that prolong the life of your surfaces by taking full advantage of recent advancements in nano technology, providing unmatched long-term stain resistance and reliability.

It is important to ensure the correct water based sealer is applied to your travertine tile which will also depend on whether they are indoors or outdoors as most sealer's will not last long outside due to being designed for internal use. If your travertine is outdoors, it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically designed for outdoor travertine.

There are two types of impregnating clear sealer, water based sealer & solvent based. In the past solvent based sealers were more widely used as they used to absorb deeper into the travertine and grout and would also last longer. Today however, thanks to new technological advancements, it is recommended only to use water based sealers, that last much longer and cause less potential damage to health and property.

Solvent based products are more difficult to apply and can create major problems when applied incorrectly as they are very hard to remove. Tile Cleaners® recommend our clients apply a long lasting water based sealer to their travertine tiles and grout. Topical sealer's (glossy plastic coating over the top of the travertine) are still used on travertine, but these older style sealers can trap moisture in the stone and make the surface slippery when wet. When a topical sealer wears in higher traffic areas, the entire surface usually needs to be stripped and re-sealed.

It is very important to ensure that tiles achieve their cleanest possible condition prior to being sealed. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and importantly ensure that there won't be any dirt, stains or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your travertine and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your travertine with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Stripping Travertine Tiles

When your travertine tiles begin to appear dull and start to stain easily, that usually means your previous sealer is wearing off and your travertine tiles are in danger of permanent damage. The sealing of your travertine tiles is of utmost importance. It is recommended to have all travertine tiles sealed upon their initial installation, as this initial seal can provide protection for up to 15 years. This well-known test in the stone industry involves placing a few drops of water on the stone and allowing it to sit for approximately 10 to 30 minutes. Afterward, wipe the water dry. If the stone does not darken, it indicates that your travertine is already sealed and does not require additional sealing. However, if the water causes the stone to darken, it suggests that the water was able to penetrate the stone, indicating the need for sealing.

All the sealers used by Tile Cleaners® are water-based. Solvent-based sealers are only used in specific cases when they are the only suitable option. The application of the sealer will not have any impact on the texture of your travertine tiles. Instead, it will provide protection against staining while preserving the natural, glossy appearance of your travertine.
