Testimonials

Thank you Tile Cleaners ® for dealing with the solvent sealer I had and resealing my hallway; I know it's a pain but you did a great job. I will definitely call you again as I need help with my tiles in the office.

Paul Gold, Gold Coast, QLD

I was about to sell my house, but was not happy with the tiles in the dining area. The tiles were white and shiny but the grout looked really dark and dirty. I already had a potential client; however the dark grout ruined the beauty of the room. I didn't have much time to fix the grout and decided to call Tile Cleaners as my real estate agency mentioned them. As my real estate agent said, Tile cleaners responded really quickly. They also pointed out that some of the grout was coming off in the hallway when they were there, which I had not even noticed. Thank you for fixing my problem so quickly. The house is sold now and I left your details with the new owner so they can keep the tiles in good condition.

Anna Rodwell, Tingalpa, QLD

I noticed that some of the tiles in my bathroom walls were loose and the grout was coming off. I am a very busy so kept on postponing calling someone to fix it. One day I got home and the loose tiles were lying broken on the floor. Can you imagine my frustration? I rang my brother in panic and he gave me Tile Cleaners' contact details. I rang them straight away. The guys told me I needed a tiler and professional regrouting work done so I thought it would take ages to fix my problem. However they organized the work very well. I had my tiles fixed on Friday night the same week and the entire bathroom regrouted on Saturday. Thank you some much for your quick help; it was such a relief.

All porous stone tiles should be sealed, sealing your travertine tiles will help prevent & reduce staining and result in maintenance becoming easier.

Sealing will keep most stains suspended at the surface by creating a barrier that provides protection against chemical attack, deterioration and contamination. Sealing is the first important step towards protecting your natural travertine against stains.

polished travertine floor for home College Grove

Limestone floor is actually quite porous and prone to scratching, staining and fracturing. It also needs to be allowed to breath, instead of being covered by synthetic sealers or urethane. We offer the right solution to protect your Limestone by using highly penetrating impregnating sealers.

The primary cause for polished stone floors becoming dull is walking on them. Prolonged foot traffic grinds and packs in dust, sand, and grit. Although the scratching that occurs is very fine, it eventually covers the majority of the surface and over time dulls the finish to the point where it loses its reflective properties. To make your stone surfaces smooth and reflective, we employ the use of high speed polishers.

Limestone is usually used in kitchens, floors, walls, bathrooms, dining rooms, around swimming pools, building foyers, public areas and facades. Since ancient times, stone has been popular as a building and decorating material. Its strength, durability, excellent insulation properties, ability to be shaped, and the variety of stone types and colours make it an exceptionally versatile building material. The porosity and makeup of limestone does however leave it prone to certain types of damage if unsealed.

What is Travertine?

Travertine is a stylish, functional and aesthetically attractive stone that gives a very appealing, old-world character to any home or business. Travertine pavers are particularly attractive around the swimming pool and surrounds with no two tiles looking the same.

Travertine forms in mineral springs, especially around hot springs, underground rivers and in limestone caves. Travertine is different to limestone (sedimentary) and marble (metamorphic) with the main characteristic of travertine being the holes within the stone created as a result of gases escaping as travertine is formed. The resulting stone is a smooth and very hard substance characterised by its porous surface.

Extensive deposits of travertine exist at Tivoli, near Rome, which is where the stone receives its name. Tivoli was known as Tiber in ancient Roman times. The ancient name for the stone was lapis tiburtinus meaning tibur stone, which has evolved to travertine.

Travertine can often appear fibrous or concentric and can come in a white, tan or a cream like colour.

Common Surface Finishes for Travertine

Honed: The surface of the tile is sanded to create a matte finish.

Tumbled: Travertine is tumbled with gravel and bearings, giving it a rough, aged appearance.

Brushed: A wire brush is used to give the surface of the travertine tile a worn, textured surface.

Filled: The pores in the travertine are filled with coloured resin or cement to produce a solid surface.

Polished: The travertine is sanded and polished, producing a shiny finish.

Sealing Travertine Tiles

Two main sealing options exist for travertine tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

deepshield Travertine

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects travertine and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores to create a breathable protective barrier.

An impregnating sealer protects the travertine surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier.

A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and once cured will not change the look of the stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces. Tile Cleaners® technicians are experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your travertine looks its absolute best.

Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealers last for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years.

Tile Cleaners® can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where the old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed from your travertine or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealers have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

Should I Seal?

You can easily test how porous your natural travertine is by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how the water is absorbed. You can then see how any type of water based stain is absorbed by the travertine tile surface and grout.

Types of sealers used on travertine tiles

There are two types of impregnating clear sealer, water based sealer & solvent based sealer.

Water based sealers and solvent-based sealers can both be used on travertine, however unless absolutely required for a specific reason, we always recommend applying a water based sealer that doesn't produce harmful fumes during application and removal.

In the past solvent based sealers were more widely used as they used to absorb deeper into the travertine and grout and would also last longer.

College Grove Travertine Tile Tuscany Tumbled Sealed

Today however, thanks to new technological advancements, it is recommended only to use water based sealers that last longer and cause less potential damage to health and property.

Topical sealer (glossy plastic coating over the top of the travertine) is still used on travertine, but these older style sealers can trap moisture in the stone and make the surface slippery when wet. When a topical sealer wears in higher traffic areas, the entire surface usually needs to be stripped and re-sealed.

It is important to ensure the correct water based sealer is applied to your travertine tile which will also depend on whether they are indoors or outdoors as most sealers will not last long outside due to being designed for internal use. If your travertine is outdoors, it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically designed for outdoor travertine.

One of the most popular product ranges is Australian made Deepshield™ unique impregnating water based sealer that prolong the life of your surfaces by taking full advantage of recent advancements in nanotechnology, providing unmatched long-term stain resistance and reliability.

It is very important to ensure that tiles achieve their cleanest possible condition prior to being sealed. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and importantly ensure that there won't be any dirt, stains or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your travertine and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your travertine with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Whether you decide to seal your natural travertine tiles using a Clear Impregnating Penetrating Sealer, a Colour Enhancing Penetrating Sealer that enriches the colour and texture of your stone or a high quality Topical Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish Sealer, with Tile Cleaners® you can rest assured your travertine tiles are receiving the best possible protection and care.

Cleaning Travertine Tiles

Different cleaning and maintenance methods should be used on travertine depending on its finish and whether it's sealed or left in its natural state.

In general, Travertine tiles should be cleaned and maintained with non acidic products, and it is recommended to have travertine professionally cleaned every few years to maintain their appearance and restore the fresh look once the tiles start to appear tired following regular daily use.

Travertine, like other calcareous stones such as limestone and marble, is referred to as "acid sensitive". Calcareous stones are readily dissolved in acid, therefore acidic cleaning products should not be used on Travertine tiles.

Stripping Travertine Tiles

When your travertine tiles begin to appear dull and start to stain easily, that usually means your previous sealer is wearing off and your travertine tiles are in danger of permanent damage. Tile Cleaners® strip/remove all necessary old sealer from your travertine tiles, restoring their natural fresh look using our state of the art cleaning machinery.

As Travertine tiles can be sealed, previous sealer may need to be removed and re-applied after it starts to wear off, this usually depends on the type of sealer used, method used during application and the amount of traffic or use. This process is called stripping and sealing, and is usually required every 2-10 years.

No matter where your travertine tiles are, Tile Cleaners® will strip, clean and professionally reseal them for you. In your kitchen, shower, bathroom, around the swimming pool, your backyard, outdoors or any hard to reach indoor areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

When we talk about a "sealer," we are referring to a liquid or carrier that contains a resin. This substance is applied to porous surfaces, whether they are natural stone or man-made materials. The primary function of a sealer is to provide protection against staining caused by water and/or oil-based materials. By applying the sealer, you can prevent these substances from penetrating and staining the surface. Additionally, a sealer can enhance the overall cleaning results by making it easier to clean and maintain the surfaces effectively.

Sealers serve a distinct purpose from polishes as they are specifically formulated to prevent liquids and dirt particles from penetrating the surface of natural stone. The sealing of your travertine tiles is of utmost importance. It is recommended to have all travertine tiles sealed upon their initial installation, as this initial seal can provide protection for up to 15 years. To ensure the preservation of your travertine floors and prevent any potential permanent damage, it is advisable to contact us promptly after the installation of your travertine floors so that we may apply the necessary protection.

The recommended sealer to use for travertine pavers around the pool is our high-quality Impregnating Penetrating Water Based Sealer. This sealer provides comprehensive protection to the travertine, ensuring its durability and preventing any potential slipperiness that may arise with other sealers.

Tile Cleaners® recommend conducting a simple "water test" to determine if your travertine floors need sealing. This well-known test in the stone industry involves placing a few drops of water on the stone and allowing it to sit for approximately 10 to 30 minutes. Afterward, wipe the water dry. If the stone does not darken, it indicates that your travertine is already sealed and does not require additional sealing. However, if the water causes the stone to darken, it suggests that the water was able to penetrate the stone, indicating the need for sealing.

All the sealers used by Tile Cleaners® are water-based. Solvent-based sealers are only used in specific cases when they are the only suitable option. The application of the sealer will not have any impact on the texture of your travertine tiles. Instead, it will provide protection against staining while preserving the natural, glossy appearance of your travertine.

Absolutely, we provide color enhancing services specifically designed for travertine. The color enhancement process involves the application of a specialized compound that enriches and intensifies the natural appearance of the travertine. By applying the color enhancer, the tiles' tones and hues are deepened, bringing out the inherent beauty of the travertine material. This treatment imparts a subtle wet or low sheen finish, enhancing the overall visual appeal of your travertine surfaces. Our color enhancing services are aimed at highlighting the unique characteristics and enhancing the aesthetics of your travertine.

Tile Cleaners® color enhancer will not alter the texture of your travertine floors. Instead, it will enhance the colors of your travertine tiles and highlight the natural beauty of the surfaces.

When we come to reseal your travertine floors, our professional team will guide you through the entire process. First, any previous sealer, if present, will be stripped off. Next, we will thoroughly clean and neutralize the travertine to ensure it is free from dust, residue, and other contaminants that can affect the new sealer. Once the travertine is dry, we will apply a new sealer and allow it to set. This process will not only rejuvenate the appearance of your travertine floors but also provide long-lasting protection, making maintenance easier for you.

The duration of resealing your travertine floors can vary depending on the size of the area being treated. Typically, most jobs are completed within a time frame of 4 to 8 hours. At Tile Cleaners®, we strive to complete both the cleaning and resealing process on the same day to minimize inconvenience and eliminate the need for multiple appointments.

It typically takes around 4 hours for the travertine tiles to be touch dry after the sealing process. However, for the sealer to fully cure and for you to safely move furniture or other heavy items back onto the tiles, it is recommended to wait at least 24 hours. During this time, it is important to avoid placing any hard objects on the tiles or grout to prevent any potential damage.

The lifespan of a sealer before reapplication is influenced by the type of sealer used. Topical sealers typically provide protection for approximately 3 years before requiring reapplication. In contrast, impregnating sealers are more durable and can last up to 15 years or even a lifetime when applied to vertical surfaces. However, areas with high foot traffic or frequent use may necessitate more frequent inspections and resealing to ensure ongoing protection. Conducting a water absorption test can help assess the porosity of the surface and aid in selecting a sealer with longer-lasting durability. It is advisable to refer to the guidelines provided by the manufacturer and consult professionals to determine the specific reapplication schedule suitable for your tiles and grout.

The effect of a sealer on the slipperiness of travertine floors depends on the type of sealer used. Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer, for example, does not alter the slipperiness of the travertine surface as it penetrates the top layer of the tiles. However, using a topical sealer may increase the slipperiness of travertine floors when wet. To maintain both the appearance and slip resistance of your travertine while preventing moisture damage, it is recommended to apply a high-quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer to the surfaces.

To safeguard your travertine tiles from acid etching, it is crucial to understand that any acidic substance poses a threat as it can easily corrode or eat away at the surface. Protecting against acid attacks can be challenging, as sealing the tiles specifically for acid resistance is difficult. The most effective method of prevention involves promptly sealing the tiles and promptly cleaning up any spills. Given the high porosity of stone-based tiles like travertine, sealing becomes essential to offer protection against both future acid attacks and liquid spillage.

Tile Cleaning offers a colour enhancing sealer that may assist in concealing scratches; however, we cannot guarantee a complete restoration of the original condition. The Deepshield™ Penetrating Colour Enhancing Sealer has the ability to darken travertine tiles by up to 20% and can help camouflage etches, providing a renewed, natural appearance to your travertine floors.

To maintain the pristine appearance of your travertine tiles and grout, it is essential to follow a regular cleaning routine. Tile Cleaners® suggests cleaning the tiles on a weekly basis using a mild detergent. This gentle cleaning agent will effectively remove any dirt or grime from the travertine surface without compromising the integrity of the sealant. It is important to avoid using strong detergents that contain harsh acids or alkalis, as they can potentially damage the sealer. Opting for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances is highly recommended to ensure the longevity of both the tiles and the sealant. For optimal protection against staining, we strongly advise sealing your travertine tiles with one of our highest quality sealers. This added layer of protection will safeguard your tiles and preserve their natural beauty for an extended period.

Tile Cleaners® follow a pricing model based on the square meter measurement for each individual room when charging for sealing travertine tiles. You can find a detailed price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for your reference. Prior to commencing the project, the team will accurately measure each room, discuss the scope of work to be undertaken, and provide you with a comprehensive cost breakdown to ensure transparency and clarity.

To accurately measure the area of travertine that requires sealing, it is best to measure each individual area separately. The process involves multiplying the width of the area by its length. For instance, if you have a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide, the total area would be calculated as 3 meters multiplied by 2 meters, resulting in 6 square meters (6m²). This method ensures precise measurements for determining the amount of travertine that needs to be sealed.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

Before we arrive, it is essential to ensure that all furniture and items are moved off your travertine floors. This step will prepare the area for the sealing process and allow us to work efficiently.
