All natural stone is slightly porous to different degrees. To protect stone an impregnator should be applied this is similar to a sealer but it doesn't create a film on top of the stone it sits within the stones pores.
Finally to dispel what you might have read or heard about sealing artificial or fake stone these are in actual fact more porous than natural stone and will need frequent applications of stain inhibitors, sealers, resins and polishes.
