I noticed that some of the tiles in my bathroom walls were loose and the grout was coming off. I am a very busy so kept on postponing calling someone to fix it. One day I got home and the loose tiles were lying broken on the floor. Can you imagine my frustration? I rang my brother in panic and he gave me Tile Cleaners' contact details. I rang them straight away. The guys told me I needed a tiler and professional regrouting work done so I thought it would take ages to fix my problem. However they organized the work very well. I had my tiles fixed on Friday night the same week and the entire bathroom regrouted on Saturday. Thank you some much for your quick help; it was such a relief.

Kerry McMyre, Mosman, NSW

I was about to sell my house, but was not happy with the tiles in the dining area. The tiles were white and shiny but the grout looked really dark and dirty. I already had a potential client; however the dark grout ruined the beauty of the room. I didn't have much time to fix the grout and decided to call Tile Cleaners as my real estate agency mentioned them. As my real estate agent said, Tile cleaners responded really quickly. They also pointed out that some of the grout was coming off in the hallway when they were there, which I had not even noticed. Thank you for fixing my problem so quickly. The house is sold now and I left your details with the new owner so they can keep the tiles in good condition.

Anna Rodwell, Tingalpa, QLD

I have several different freshly laid tiles in my new house. All pathways have stone tiles and there are marble tiles in the bathrooms and porcelain in the kitchen. I needed to get them sealed and was not sure if it was possible to seal them all. I contacted Tile Cleaners because my dad recommended them. He had a similar situation in his house and was very happy with the job Tile Cleaners had done. I was very worried about my tiles since they were brand new and very expensive. Tile Cleaners team were very patient with me, explaining how they were going to apply the sealer on different types of tiles, what sealer they would use, how long it would last for and advised me on how to take care of my tiles. I called Tile Cleaners a few times confirming details, asking for prices, making sure they could to the job during the weekend etc. The guys were amazingly patient and helpful. When I had gathered all the information I wanted, I was ready to go ahead. The work done by Tile Cleaners actually took less time than what it took me looking for information about it. Sorry for the pain I caused, and again thank you.

What is Sandstone

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized minerals or rock grains. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar, one of the most common minerals in the Earth's crust as well as calcite, gypsum or various iron compounds. Like sand, sandstone has a granular texture and may be found in almost any colour, but the most common colours are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, and white. Since sandstone beds often form highly visible cliffs and other topographic features, certain colours of sandstone have been strongly identified with certain regions.

Sandstone Paving Blue Tile Sealing EnfieldSandstone is available in tiles, slabs and blocks, in finishes ranging from natural and calibrated, to honed, polished and flamed. Sandstone is a very versatile material, applicable for most types applications, including wall and flooring.

Sandstone flooring is porous and prone to scratching, staining and fracturing. Sandstone also needs to be allowed to breath instead of being covered by synthetic sealers or urethane. Tile Cleaners® experienced technicians offer the best solutions to protect your sandstone by using highly penetrating impregnating sealers.

The primary cause for polished stone floors becoming dull is foot traffic. Prolonged foot traffic grinds and packs in dust, sand, and grit. Although the scratching that occurs is very fine, it eventually covers the majority of the surface and over time dulls the finish to the point where it loses its reflective properties. To make your stone surfaces smooth and reflective, we employ the use of high speed polishers.

All natural stone is porous to different degrees. To protect your sandstone an impregnating sealer should be applied which is similar to a topical sealer but doesn't create a film on top of the stone, instead it sits within the stones pores. The idea of using sealers on stone surface is to prevent water from penetrating the porous structure of sandstone, which eventually leads to stains, cracks, weathering, and deterioration. Sealing your tiles and/or grout helps prevent & reduce staining by providing a barrier against stain carrying substances.

Professional regular maintenance will be required to maintain the honed or polished appearance of sandstone. Sandstone looks best with a honed or low/medium sheen appearance however many people also insist on a high shine finish. Some low calcite sandstone can be extremely difficult to polish and therefore vitrification would be required, vitrification however can give the stone an unnatural plastic appearance when repeated too often.

Sealing Sandstone Tiles

Sandstone can be highly porous - although porosity will vary from piece to piece a tablespoon of water on a sandstone surface will be absorbed in seconds. Porosity is also affected by the finish - highly polished sandstone is a little harder to penetrate than surfaces with a honed(matte) finish.

deepshield sandstone To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your sandstone and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your sandstone with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

sandstone beige slabs raw Enfield

Sandstone's calcite composition makes it susceptible to acid attack from spilt food and drink. Its high porosity can also mean oil will permeate the surface and leave stains when not properly sealed with a penetrating/impregnating sealer.

Sealing your sandstone will keep most stains suspended at the surface, sealing is the first important step towards protecting your sandstone against stains.

Sandstone Tile Pre Sealing Preparation

Two main sealing options exist for sandstone tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects sandstone and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology, creating a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the sandstone surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years.

A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your sandstone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone whereas a penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Enfield's Tile Cleaners® technicians are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your sandstone looks its absolute best. Our technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where your old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's usually have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

Pre-Sealing Preparation

  1. Any surface to be sealed should be clean and looking just as you want it before it is sealed - it may be impossible to remove stains after sealing without once again having to strip the sealer. Acidic cleaners should not be used on sandstone as they will cause damage.
  2. Sandstone must have no other coating such as wax or a topical sealer before it's sealed, so any such coating must be removed before sealing.
  3. Floor must be thoroughly dry before applying any sealer.

Enfield Sandstone Tile Protection from Acid Etching

Protection from Acid Etching

It is very difficult to seal sandstone against acid attack. Sandstone and other calcite based stone such as marble and travertine are prone to acid etching. Sandstone is immediately 'etched' (eaten/corroded) by any acidic material on contact - including lemon juice, cola, wine and champagne. For this reason the honed(matte) look is popular, as it doesn't show etch marks as much as polished sandstone. In any case, acidic substances should be cleaned as soon as possible.

Sandstone Floor Care & Maintenance

Sandstone can be difficult to maintain if a proper maintenance cycle is not put in place from the point of installation. As it is usually not polished, the problem of scratching is not as big an issue as it is with marble, however if proper barrier matting is not introduced even a honed surface will lose its attractiveness. The most important factor to consider with the maintenance of sandstone is the possibility of staining.

Frequently Asked Questions

When we talk about a "sealer," we are referring to a liquid or carrier that contains a resin. This substance is applied to porous surfaces, whether they are natural stone or man-made materials. The primary function of a sealer is to provide protection against staining caused by water and/or oil-based materials. By applying the sealer, you can prevent these substances from penetrating and staining the surface. Additionally, a sealer can enhance the overall cleaning results by making it easier to clean and maintain the surfaces effectively.

Sealing sandstone tiles is a crucial step in ensuring their long-term quality and preventing potential damage. Unlike polishes, sealers are specifically formulated to create a protective barrier that prevents liquids and dirt particles from penetrating the porous nature of the natural stone. It is highly recommended to have your sandstone tiles sealed, especially during the initial installation process, as this initial seal can provide effective protection for up to 15 years. By promptly contacting professionals to seal your sandstone floors after installation, you can safeguard them against accidental permanent damage, preserving their beauty and durability for years to come.

There are various types of sealers available for sandstone tiles at Tile Cleaning. We offer a range of high-quality sealers that cater to different requirements. Whether you prefer an Impregnating Sealer or a Topical Sealer for your sandstone tiles, we have options to suit your needs. Our goal is to provide you with top-quality sealers that effectively protect and enhance the beauty of your sandstone tiles.

When it comes to sealing sandstone pavers around a pool area, we highly recommend our premium Impregnating Penetrating Water Based Sealer. This high-quality sealer is specifically designed to provide comprehensive protection to your sandstone pavers, penetrating deep into the stone to shield it from potential damage. Additionally, this sealer eliminates the slipperiness that can be associated with other sealers, ensuring a safer surface for walking on the sandstone pavers. Trust our Impregnating Penetrating Water Based Sealer to effectively safeguard your sandstone pavers while preserving their natural beauty.

To determine if your sandstone floors require sealing, Tile Cleaning recommends conducting a simple "water test." This widely-used method in the stone industry can help assess the need for sealing. Start by placing a few drops of water on the stone surface and allowing it to sit for approximately 10 to 30 minutes. Afterwards, wipe the water dry. If your sandstone did not darken during this process, it indicates that your floors are adequately sealed and do not require additional sealing. However, if the water droplets caused darkening or were absorbed by the stone, it signifies that your sandstone is susceptible to water penetration, indicating the need for sealing.

When it comes to sealing sandstone tiles, all our products at Tile Cleaners® are water-based. We typically avoid using solvent-based sealers, except in specific cases where it is the only suitable option. The application of our sealer will not impact the texture of your sandstone tiles in any manner. It is designed to preserve the natural texture and appearance of the tiles while providing essential protection against staining. Rest assured, our sealer will help maintain the desired lustrous and natural finish of your sandstone tiles.

Absolutely, we provide color enhancing services specifically designed for travertine. The color enhancement process involves the application of a specialized compound that enriches and intensifies the natural appearance of the travertine. By applying the color enhancer, the tiles' tones and hues are deepened, bringing out the inherent beauty of the travertine material. This treatment imparts a subtle wet or low sheen finish, enhancing the overall visual appeal of your travertine surfaces. Our color enhancing services are aimed at highlighting the unique characteristics and enhancing the aesthetics of your travertine.

When it comes to the color enhancer used by Tile Cleaners®, rest assured that it will not alter the texture of your sandstone floors. The purpose of the color enhancer is to specifically enhance the color of your sandstone tiles while preserving the natural texture of the surfaces. By applying the color enhancer, the inherent beauty of your sandstone will be accentuated, resulting in a vibrant and visually appealing appearance. Trust our color enhancer to bring out the best in your sandstone tiles without compromising their texture.

When our professional team arrives to seal your sandstone floors, they will guide you through each step of the process to ensure complete transparency. The first step involves stripping any previous sealer, if present. Next, the sandstone is meticulously cleaned and neutralized to remove dust, residues, and any other factors that may impact the effectiveness of the new sealer. Once the sandstone floor is dry, a new sealer is applied and allowed to set. The result is a rejuvenated appearance for your sandstone floors, which not only looks new but also gains protection. Additionally, the sealed surface becomes easier to maintain, providing long-lasting benefits for your sandstone flooring.

The duration for resealing sandstone floors can vary depending on the size of the area being sealed. On average, most jobs take approximately 4 to 8 hours to complete. At Tile Cleaners®, we aim to provide efficient service, which is why we typically perform both the cleaning and resealing processes on the same day. This approach eliminates the need for multiple appointments, ensuring a hassle-free experience for our customers.

After the sandstone tiles have been sealed, they typically take around 4 hours to become touch dry. However, it is important to note that the sealer requires approximately 24 hours to fully cure. During this curing period, it is recommended to avoid placing any heavy objects, such as furniture, on the tiles or grout. To ensure the best results and longevity of the seal, it is advised to wait at least 24 hours before placing any items back onto the sealed sandstone tiles.

The lifespan of a sealer before reapplication is influenced by the type of sealer used. Topical sealers typically provide protection for approximately 3 years before requiring reapplication. In contrast, impregnating sealers are more durable and can last up to 15 years or even a lifetime when applied to vertical surfaces. However, areas with high foot traffic or frequent use may necessitate more frequent inspections and resealing to ensure ongoing protection. Conducting a water absorption test can help assess the porosity of the surface and aid in selecting a sealer with longer-lasting durability. It is advisable to refer to the guidelines provided by the manufacturer and consult professionals to determine the specific reapplication schedule suitable for your tiles and grout.

When using Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer, there is no impact on the slipperiness of your sandstone floors. This sealer is designed to penetrate the top layer of the sandstone, preserving its natural slip resistance. However, it's worth noting that applying a Topical Sealer may potentially make the sandstone floors slippery when wet. To maintain both the appearance and slip resistance of your sandstone surfaces, it is advisable to opt for a high-quality, invisible, and fully breathable impregnating sealer. This type of sealer ensures that your sandstone is protected from damaging moisture while retaining its original slip resistance.

Acid etching refers to the process where acidic substances come into contact with sandstone tiles, causing them to corrode or be eaten away. Sandstone is particularly vulnerable to acid attacks, and protecting it from such damage can be challenging. The most effective way to safeguard your sandstone tiles is to promptly seal them and clean up any spills immediately. Given the high porosity of stone-based tiles, sealing is essential to provide protection against future acid attacks and liquid spills. By sealing your sandstone tiles, you create a barrier that helps prevent the penetration of acids and other damaging substances, thereby minimizing the risk of etching and preserving the integrity of your sandstone surfaces.

While Tile Cleaners®'s color enhancing sealer can potentially assist in concealing scratches on your sandstone floors, it's important to note that it cannot guarantee a complete restoration to their original condition. The Deepshield™ Penetrating Color Enhancing Sealer is designed to darken the sandstone tiles by up to 20% and may help camouflage etches, ultimately revitalizing the appearance of your sandstone floors. However, the extent to which scratches and etches can be hidden or diminished will depend on their severity and the overall condition of the tiles. For the best outcome, it is recommended to consult with professionals who can assess your specific situation and provide appropriate guidance.

To maintain the fresh appearance of your sealed sandstone tiles, Tile Cleaners® suggests regular cleaning on a weekly basis using a mild detergent. This will help remove any dirt or grime from the surface of the sandstone while ensuring that the sealer remains unaffected. It is crucial to avoid using strong detergents that have high acidity or alkalinity as they may compromise the integrity of the sealer. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances for safe and effective cleaning. Furthermore, the best way to protect your sandstone tiles from staining and maintain their pristine condition is to seal them with one of our top-quality sealers. Sealing provides the optimal safeguard against potential stains and enhances the longevity of your sandstone tiles.

Tile Cleaners® follow a pricing structure based on the size of each individual sandstone room. You can find a comprehensive price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for your reference. Prior to commencing the work, our team will measure each room separately and discuss the scope of the project with you. This includes confirming the specific tasks to be carried out as well as providing a clear breakdown of all associated costs. We believe in transparent communication to ensure that you are fully informed about the pricing details before we begin the sealing process.

To accurately measure the area of sandstone that requires sealing, we suggest measuring each specific area individually. The process is straightforward: multiply the width of the area by its length. For instance, if you have a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide, the total area would be calculated as 3 meters (length) multiplied by 2 meters (width), resulting in a total area of 6 square meters (6m²). By measuring each sandstone area separately and performing the width by length calculation, you can determine the precise area that needs to be sealed.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

Before we arrive to seal your sandstone floors, it is important to ensure that all furniture and items have been moved off the floors. By clearing the area, you provide our team with unobstructed access to the sandstone surfaces, allowing for a more efficient and effective sealing process.
