Testimonials

I was about to sell my house, but was not happy with the tiles in the dining area. The tiles were white and shiny but the grout looked really dark and dirty. I already had a potential client; however the dark grout ruined the beauty of the room. I didn't have much time to fix the grout and decided to call Tile Cleaners as my real estate agency mentioned them. As my real estate agent said, Tile cleaners responded really quickly. They also pointed out that some of the grout was coming off in the hallway when they were there, which I had not even noticed. Thank you for fixing my problem so quickly. The house is sold now and I left your details with the new owner so they can keep the tiles in good condition.

Anna Rodwell, Tingalpa, QLD

We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again.

Olivia and Andrew Clark, Hornsby, NSW

My mother's tiles were old and ugly, as she has been living in the same house her entire life without ever really taking care of her tiles. I called Tile Cleaners to get advice on what to do with them. They came to her house the next day to have a look at my mum's tiles. I am very satisfied with how patient and highly professional you were with my mother. I am sorry I couldn't be there when you arrived, and I am really impressed by how you managed to explain everything to my mom and help her out. Thank you for doing a great job.

What is Limestone

Limestone is a sedimentary rock which is formed at the bottom of the ocean. It consists wholly or mainly of calcium carbonate. In its pure state it is white but it may be coloured by other materials. This calcite is sourced primarily from the shells and bones of marine organisms. The sediment that builds up preserves these organisms into fossils. Over millions of years heat and pressure cause a chemical reaction which turns this sediment into limestone.

Cleaning Limestone Floors

Limestone flooring is quite porous and prone to scratching, staining and fracturing, also needing to be allowed to breath instead of being covered by synthetic sealers or urethane. Tile Cleaners® offer the right solution to protect your limestone by using highly penetrating impregnating sealers, creating a barrier that provides protection against chemical attack, deterioration and contamination.

The primary cause for polished stone floors becoming dull is foot traffic, prolonged use grinds and packs in dust, sand and grit. Although the scratching that occurs is very fine, it eventually covers the majority of the surface and over time dulls the finish to the point where it loses its reflective properties. To make your stone surfaces smooth and reflective, we employ the use of high speed polishers.

Cremorne Outdoor Limestone Floor Cleaning

Cremorne Polished Limestone tilesMany older buildings have durable limestone flooring, the chalky porous type with a smooth granular surface typical of most French and Spanish limestone. This variety does stain easier than marble, varies in hardness and does become etched by acids including soft drink, as well as absorbs oils and other liquids. Common colours are black, grey, white, yellow and brown. Limestone should be sealed with a penetrating sealer to prevent staining and reduce soiling and should only be cleaned with neutral pH detergents. Because it is soft, limestone should never be cleaned at pressures above 800 PSI and then only if the grout is in good condition.

Professional regular maintenance will be required to maintain the honed or polished appearance of limestone. Limestone looks best with a honed or low/medium sheen appearance however some people insist on a high shine finish. Some low calcite limestone can be extremely difficult to polish and therefore vitrification would be required, vitrification however can give the stone an unnatural plastic appearance if repeated too often.

Two main sealing options exist for limestone tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects limestone and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology, creating a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the limestone surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your limestone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Cremorne Polished LimestoneCremorne's Tile Cleaners® technicians are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your limestone looks its absolute best. Tile Cleaners® experienced technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where the old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

Pre-Sealing Preparation

  1. Any surface to be sealed should be clean and looking just as you want it before it is sealed - it may be impossible to remove stains after sealing without once again having to strip the sealer. Acidic cleaners should not be used on limestone as they will cause damage.
  2. Limestone must have no other coating such as wax or a topical sealer before it's sealed, so any such coating must be removed before sealing.
  3. Floor must be thoroughly dry before applying any sealer.

Our limestone floor restoration services bring your limestone tiles & grout to their best possible condition, and protect them for years to come.

Protection from Acid Etching

It is very difficult to seal limestone against acid attack. Limestone and other calcite based stone such as marble and travertine are prone to acid etching. Limestone is immediately 'etched' (eaten/corroded) by any acidic material on contact - including lemon juice, cola, wine and champagne. For this reason the honed(matte) look is popular, as it doesn't show etch marks as much as polished limestone. In any case, acidic substances should be cleaned as soon as possible.

Limestone Floor Care & Maintenance

Limestone can be difficult to maintain if a proper maintenance cycle is not put in place from the point of installation. As it is usually not polished, the problem of scratching is not as big an issue as it is with marble, however if proper barrier matting is not introduced even a honed surface will lose its attractiveness. The most important factor to consider with the maintenance of limestone is the possibility of staining.

Do’s:

  • Clean spills right away
  • Seal limestone floors since it's natural stone
  • Place a mat at each doorway
  • Use a Microfibre mop to clean floors
  • Clean floors regularly

Don’ts:

  • Never use bleach, ammonia or vinegar to clean Limestone floors
  • Don’t use cleaners that are acidic
  • Never use an abrasive cleaner or scouring pad.

Limestone Tile Sealing

All porous tiles should be sealed, sealing your tiles helps prevent & reduce staining. Sealing your limestone will keep most stains suspended at the surface, creating a barrier that provides protection against chemical attack, deterioration and contamination. Sealing is the first important step towards protecting your surfaces against stains.

Limestone Stripping

Stripping, scrubbing and cleaning to remove old sealant and its residue, restoring the original appearance of the floor. Our technicians are equipped with all necessary equipment and possess all skills and experience needed to provide your limestone tiles with an extensive floor stripping service. Limestone Grinding

Grinding will smooth out imperfections and open a new layer upon which it is possible to build a high quality honed or polished finish. Grinding will remove deep scratches, stains and other contaminations from your limestone, resulting in a very smooth and even surface. Grinding will also remove any lippage, the term used for uneven tiles which can occur after a typical installation.

Limestone Honing

Honed limestone surfaces have a more satin-feel, smooth and velvety to the touch often more suited to casual, comfortable environments than more formal polished surfaces. Honing your floors is a fantastic way to virtually eliminate taxing maintenance requirements while still having the wonderful characteristic of beautiful stone surfaces in your home or business.

Limestone Polishing

Polishing is achieved by using very fine grade abrasive diamond discs until a reflective finish is achieved. These final grades reduce scratches which are not even visible to the human eye allowing the natural crystals on the surface to reflect light more effectively. Highly polished floors have much smaller pores to collect soil, dirt and grime, ensuring maintenance is made a lot easier.

Efflorescence Treatment

Efflorescence is the formation of salt deposits on or near the surface of the tile and grout. Tile Cleaners® technicians have a variety of equipment for the effective removal of efflorescence. We also carry all the required treatments, agitation tools as well as chemical solutions to safely and effectively removed efflorescence deposits internally and externally.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our commitment to safety is rooted in protecting your loved ones by avoiding any potentially harmful substances or ingredients. When selecting cleaning products, Tile Cleaning exercises utmost care to exclude any ingredients that could pose health risks. This approach not only helps preserve the condition of your stone tiles but also exemplifies our dedication to prioritizing the overall health and safety of your household.

To maintain the appearance and keep your limestone tiles looking new, Tile Cleaning recommends a regular cleaning routine. Clean the tiles each week using a damp microfiber cloth and a mild detergent to remove dirt and grime from the surface. It is important to avoid using strong detergents containing acids or alkalis, as they can potentially damage the sealer. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances for safe and effective cleaning. In addition to regular cleaning, the best protection for your limestone tiles is to have them sealed with one of Tile Cleaning highest quality sealers. Sealing provides an extra layer of protection against staining and helps preserve the beauty of your limestone tiles for longer.

If the stain on your limestone floor is relatively new and has not deeply set in, there is a good chance that Tile Cleaning will be able to remove it. However, it is important to note that complete removal of the stain cannot be guaranteed. The aim is to clean the stained area and restore it to the best possible condition. The success of stain removal also depends on whether the limestone tiles have been previously sealed or not. Some stains may have penetrated the natural stone and settled below the surface, making them more challenging to clean. To prevent future staining, it is recommended to have Tile Cleaning perform a thorough process of stripping, cleaning, and sealing your limestone floor. This comprehensive approach ensures that your limestone floors are protected from future stains and can be maintained in optimal condition.

Tile Cleaning follows a pricing structure that is based on per square meter for each separate room when it comes to cleaning limestone tiles. You can find a price list on the Tile Cleaning website, which you can review for your reference. Prior to commencing the work, Tile Cleaning will measure each room individually, discuss the scope of the work to be carried out, and confirm all costs with you. This ensures transparency and allows you to have a clear understanding of the pricing involved before any cleaning work begins.

To measure the size of a limestone area, it is recommended to measure each room separately. Begin by measuring the width and length of the room. Multiply the width by the length to calculate the total square meterage. For example, if a room is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide, the calculation would be 3 meters * 2 meters = 6 square meters in total. By measuring each room individually and using the width * length method, you can accurately determine the size of the limestone area you wish to assess or have cleaned.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

To prepare your limestone floors for cleaning, it is recommended to move all furniture and items off the floor. This allows the cleaning process to be carried out efficiently and effectively. By removing furniture and items from the limestone floor, you create a clear space for the cleaning team to work on, ensuring that the entire surface can be properly cleaned. This preparation step helps to facilitate the cleaning process and ensures that your limestone floors receive the attention they need.

The frequency of sealing limestone floors depends on factors such as the type of sealer used and the level of foot traffic they experience. Australia's Deepshield™ range of deep impregnating water-based sealers, including Deepshield™ Gold with a potential lifespan of up to 15 years, offers long-term benefits. On the other hand, topical sealers typically last around 3 years. However, if your limestone floors endure high foot traffic or are exposed to severe weather conditions (in the case of outdoor tiles), the lifespan of the sealer may be shorter. The condition of the tiles is also a factor to consider. Once you notice patchy areas and easy staining, it is an indication that resealing is necessary. For further assistance and inquiries, feel free to contact us, and our team will be happy to assist you.

When Tile Cleaning arrive to reseal your limestone floors, you can expect a professional team that will guide you through the entire process, ensuring transparency and clarity. The process begins with the removal of any previous sealer, if applied, followed by a thorough cleaning and neutralization of the limestone to eliminate dust, residue, and any other substances that could affect the effectiveness of the new sealer. Once the limestone floor is dry, a new sealer will be carefully applied and allowed to set. This resealing process will not only rejuvenate the appearance of your limestone floor, making it look new again, but it will also provide protection and make maintenance easier in the long run. Rest assured that Tile Cleaning follows a systematic approach to deliver quality results and ensure your satisfaction.

The best time to seal your limestone floors is right after installation to provide immediate protection against accidental staining or damage. As for determining if your limestone floors currently require sealing, keep an eye out for patchy areas on the floor where the sealant may have worn off. Additionally, if you notice that your limestone tiles are becoming more susceptible to staining, it indicates that the existing sealer has deteriorated and resealing is necessary to prevent permanent stains. By monitoring the condition of your limestone floors and being attentive to any changes in their appearance and stain resistance, you can determine when it is the right time to seal them.
