What is Granite?

Granite is a very hard natural stone denser than marble. A geologist will tell you that it is an igneous or metamorphic rock that is highly saturated with silica. Silica when combined with oxygen makes the mineral quartz, and it has a rating of 7 on the Mohs scale, which determines a materials' hardness. Diamond has a rating of 10. Suffice it to say there are not too many things that will easily scratch granite.

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects granite and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores to create a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the granite surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone.

Sealing your granite will keep most stains suspended at the surface, creating a barrier that provides protection against chemical attack, deterioration and contamination. Sealing is the first important step towards protecting your investment against stains.

Granite Tile Care Tips & Advice

  • Regularly dust the surface.
  • Keep floors swept or vaccuum regularly.
  • Only use the proper stone care products.
  • Use few drops of neutral cleaner, stone soap, or a mild liquid dish washing detergent or warm water.
  • Use a clean rag.
  • Use a coaster or gliders under chairs and other furniture.
  • All products containing acids should be avoided. The acid in high concentration etches the surface.
  • After using the soap solution, the surface should be rinsed properly.
  • In the kitchen extremely hot pans should not be kept over granite slabs since it quickly absorbs heat and distributes it out.
  • Take care and pride of your stone and it will give you many years of performance.
  • Consult a stone restoration contractor prior to installation. These are the professionals who will suggest the proper materials and methods of installation.

  • Don't use vinegar, soft scrub, windex or your common household cleaners, especially in showers.
