Testimonials

My mother's tiles were old and ugly, as she has been living in the same house her entire life without ever really taking care of her tiles. I called Tile Cleaners to get advice on what to do with them. They came to her house the next day to have a look at my mum's tiles. I am very satisfied with how patient and highly professional you were with my mother. I am sorry I couldn't be there when you arrived, and I am really impressed by how you managed to explain everything to my mom and help her out. Thank you for doing a great job.

Angela Coopers, Concord, NSW

When I moved into my new house, I was shocked by how dirty and old the tiles in the entire house looked. I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be like that or if they were just really dirty. I decided to call Tile Cleaners and ask them to have a look and tell me what I could do to improve the look of my tiles. Tile Cleaners ® came the same weekend and managed to make my tiles look brand new. They also informed me that the sealer would protect my tiles for years to come. Amazing! Thank you guys! My floor looks gorgeous.

Amanda Burtender, Brighton East, VIC

Thank you Tile Cleaners ® for dealing with the solvent sealer I had and resealing my hallway; I know it's a pain but you did a great job. I will definitely call you again as I need help with my tiles in the office.

What is Donnybrook Stone

Donnybrook Stone is a versatile and durable sandstone originating near the town of Donnybrook in Western Australia. Donnybrook Stone is available in colour variations ranging from white to beige to deep pink. Donnybrook Stone produces excellent floor tiles, cladding material and looks fantastic around the swimming pool and elsewhere in the garden; large structural walls, commercial facades and entire buildings are found made entirely from Donnybrook Stone.

Donnybrook Stone flooring is porous and prone to scratching, staining and fracturing. Donnybrook Stone also needs to be allowed to breath instead of being covered by synthetic sealers or urethane. Our experienced technicians offer the best solutions to protect your Donnybrook Stone by using highly penetrating impregnating sealers.

The primary cause for polished stone surfaces becoming dull is foot traffic. Prolonged foot traffic grinds and packs in dust, sand, and grit. Although the scratching that occurs is very fine, it eventually covers the majority of the surface and over time dulls the finish to the point where it loses its reflective properties. To make your stone surfaces smooth and reflective, we employ the use of high speed polishers.

All natural stone is porous to different degrees. To protect your Donnybrook Stone an impregnating sealer should be applied which is similar to a topical sealer but doesn't create a film on top of the stone, instead it sits within the stones pores.

The idea of using sealers on the stone surface is to prevent water and oils from penetrating the porous structure of Donnybrook Stone, which eventually leads to stains, cracks, weathering, and deterioration. Sealing your stone and/or grout helps prevent & reduce staining by providing a barrier against stain carrying substances.

Sealing Donnybrook Stone Tiles

Donnybrook Stone can be highly porous - although porosity will vary from piece to piece, a tablespoon of water on a Donnybrook Stone surface will be absorbed in seconds. Porosity is also affected by the finish - highly polished Donnybrook Stone is a little harder to penetrate than surfaces with a honed (matte) finish.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your Donnybrook Stone and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your Donnybrook Stone with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Donnybrook Stone's calcite composition makes it susceptible to acid attack from spilt food and drink. Its high porosity can also mean oil will permeate the surface and leave stains when not properly sealed with a penetrating/impregnating sealer.

Sealing your Donnybrook Stone will keep most stains suspended at the surface, sealing is the first important step towards protecting your Donnybrook Stone against stains.

Two main sealing options exist for bluestone tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects your Donnybrook Stone and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology, creating a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects Donnybrook Stone and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold which is based on the latest fluoro-bond technology will last for up to 15 years.

A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your Donnybrook Stone and once cured will not change the look whereas a penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® technicians are experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your Donnybrook Stone looks its absolute best. Our technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where your old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's usually have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

Pre-Sealing Preparation

  • Any surface to be sealed should be clean and looking just as you want it before it is sealed - it may be impossible to remove stains after sealing without once again having to strip the sealer. Acidic cleaners should not be used on Donnybrook Stone as they will cause damage.
  • Donnybrook Stone must have no other coating such as wax or a topical sealer before it's sealed, so any such coating must be removed before sealing.
  • Floor must be thoroughly dry before applying any sealer.

Protection from Acid Etching

It is very difficult to seal Donnybrook Stone against acid attack. Donnybrook Stone and other calcite based stone such as marble and travertine are prone to acid etching. Donnybrook Stone is immediately 'etched' (eaten/corroded) by any acidic material on contact - including lemon juice, cola, wine and champagne. Acidic substances should be cleaned as soon as possible.

Donnybrook Stone Floor Care & Maintenance

Donnybrook Stone can be difficult to maintain if a proper maintenance cycle is not put in place from the point of installation. Scratching is not as big an issue as it is with marble, however if proper barrier matting is not introduced even an unpolished surface will lose its attractiveness. The most important factor to consider with the maintenance of Donnybrook Stone is the possibility of staining.

Do's:
  • Clean spills right away
  • Seal Donnybrook Stone floors since it’s natural stone
  • Place a mat at each doorway
  • Use a Microfibre mop to clean floors
  • Clean floors regularly
Don'ts:
  • Never use bleach, ammonia or vinegar to clean Donnybrook Stone floors
  • Don't use cleaners that are acidic
  • Never use an abrasive cleaner or scouring pad.

Frequently Asked Questions

When we talk about a "sealer," we are referring to a liquid or carrier that contains a resin. This substance is applied to porous surfaces, whether they are natural stone or man-made materials. The primary function of a sealer is to provide protection against staining caused by water and/or oil-based materials. By applying the sealer, you can prevent these substances from penetrating and staining the surface. Additionally, a sealer can enhance the overall cleaning results by making it easier to clean and maintain the surfaces effectively.

Sealers are different from polishes and are actually designed to keep liquids and dirt particles from sinking into the natural stone. It is extremely important to have your Donnybrook Stone sealed. All Donnybrook Stone should be sealed when first installed; this initial seal can last up to 15 years. It is important to call us as soon as your Donnybrook Stone floors are installed so we can protect them before any accidental permanent damage occurs.

Yes, here at Tile Cleaners® we provide a variety of top quality sealers to seal your Donnybrook Stone, whether you choose to use an Impregnating Sealer or a Topical Sealer depending on your needs.

The best sealer to use for Donnybrook Stone pavers around the pool is our high quality Impregnating Penetrating Water Based Sealer that protects your stone to the core and eliminates the slipperiness factor other sealers can create with Donnybrook Stone pavers.

Tile Cleaners® advise a "water test". First you need to place a few drops of water on your stone and let it set for around 10 to 30 minutes then wipe it dry. If your stone did not darken, it means your Donnybrook Stone is perfectly sealed and does not require sealing, but if it has darkened, it means that the water was able to penetrate your stone and sealing is required.

All of our sealing products are water based, we do not apply solvent- based sealer except in certain cases where it is the only option. The sealer will not affect the texture of your Donnybrook Stone in any way; however, it will protect your Donnybrook Stone from staining and maintain that lustrous, natural finish you are looking for.

Absolutely, we provide color enhancing services specifically designed for travertine. The color enhancement process involves the application of a specialized compound that enriches and intensifies the natural appearance of the travertine. By applying the color enhancer, the tiles' tones and hues are deepened, bringing out the inherent beauty of the travertine material. This treatment imparts a subtle wet or low sheen finish, enhancing the overall visual appeal of your travertine surfaces. Our color enhancing services are aimed at highlighting the unique characteristics and enhancing the aesthetics of your travertine.

Our professional team will go through the job processes with you step by step so you know exactly what you're getting. The process includes stripping any previous sealer if applied, the Donnybrook Stone is then thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. A new sealer is applied to the dry Donnybrook Stone and allowed to set. The newly sealed Donnybrook Stone will not only look new again, it will be protected and result in your Donnybrook Stone becoming easier to maintain.

It all depends on the size of the area that we are sealing but most jobs take 4 - 8 hours to complete. We do cleaning and resealing in the same day so you don't have to fuss with more than one appointment.

It takes 4 hours to be touch dry and normally 24 hours for the sealer to fully cure, which is when you can put everything back into place. Nothing hard such as furniture can be moved on to the tiles and grout for at least 24 hours.

The lifespan of a sealer before reapplication is influenced by the type of sealer used. Topical sealers typically provide protection for approximately 3 years before requiring reapplication. In contrast, impregnating sealers are more durable and can last up to 15 years or even a lifetime when applied to vertical surfaces. However, areas with high foot traffic or frequent use may necessitate more frequent inspections and resealing to ensure ongoing protection. Conducting a water absorption test can help assess the porosity of the surface and aid in selecting a sealer with longer-lasting durability. It is advisable to refer to the guidelines provided by the manufacturer and consult professionals to determine the specific reapplication schedule suitable for your tiles and grout.

Deepshield™ Impregnating Penetrating Sealer does not alter the slipperiness of your Donnybrook Stone tiles' surface as the sealer penetrates the top layer of your Donnybrook Stone. Topical Sealer may result in your Donnybrook Stone floors becoming slippery when wet. To maintain the look and slip resistance of your Donnybrook Stone and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your surfaces with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Any acidic substance is harmful for your Donnybrook Stone, they can be etched (eaten/corroded) easily and sealing against acid attack is very difficult. The best way to protect your Donnybrook Stone tiles from acid attack is to seal and clean spills immediately. The high porosity of stone based tiles makes sealing a must in order to provide protection against future acid attack and liquid spillage.

To keep your Donnybrook Stone and grout looking new, Tile Cleaners® recommend cleaning each week with a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime from the Donnybrook Stone surface. Strong detergents(strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer, mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended. Our best advice to protect your Donnybrook Stone is to seal them with one of our highest quality sealers. This is the best protection your Donnybrook Stone can receive against staining.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate Donnybrook Stone area. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

We recommend that you measure each Donnybrook Stone area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

Move all furniture and items from the areas so they are ready for when we arrive.
