Testimonials

I was about to sell my house, but was not happy with the tiles in the dining area. The tiles were white and shiny but the grout looked really dark and dirty. I already had a potential client; however the dark grout ruined the beauty of the room. I didn't have much time to fix the grout and decided to call Tile Cleaners as my real estate agency mentioned them. As my real estate agent said, Tile cleaners responded really quickly. They also pointed out that some of the grout was coming off in the hallway when they were there, which I had not even noticed. Thank you for fixing my problem so quickly. The house is sold now and I left your details with the new owner so they can keep the tiles in good condition.

My mother's tiles were old and ugly, as she has been living in the same house her entire life without ever really taking care of her tiles. I called Tile Cleaners to get advice on what to do with them. They came to her house the next day to have a look at my mum's tiles. I am very satisfied with how patient and highly professional you were with my mother. I am sorry I couldn't be there when you arrived, and I am really impressed by how you managed to explain everything to my mom and help her out. Thank you for doing a great job.

Angela Coopers, Concord, NSW

I have several different freshly laid tiles in my new house. All pathways have stone tiles and there are marble tiles in the bathrooms and porcelain in the kitchen. I needed to get them sealed and was not sure if it was possible to seal them all. I contacted Tile Cleaners because my dad recommended them. He had a similar situation in his house and was very happy with the job Tile Cleaners had done. I was very worried about my tiles since they were brand new and very expensive. Tile Cleaners team were very patient with me, explaining how they were going to apply the sealer on different types of tiles, what sealer they would use, how long it would last for and advised me on how to take care of my tiles. I called Tile Cleaners a few times confirming details, asking for prices, making sure they could to the job during the weekend etc. The guys were amazingly patient and helpful. When I had gathered all the information I wanted, I was ready to go ahead. The work done by Tile Cleaners actually took less time than what it took me looking for information about it. Sorry for the pain I caused, and again thank you.

Are Swimming Pool Pavers Different?

Swimming Pool Pavers can vary greatly, while some are made to be sturdy and withstand a great deal of exposure from UV, rain and other elements, common varieties such as limestone, travertine and bluestone are naturally very porous and will require sealing. Tiles that are constructed to withstand the elements will also require some protection on your part. Over time, it's common for outdoor tiles to suffer from a wide range of different problems, including staining, cracking and more. By sealing your outdoor tile you protect your tiles against staining, damage and extend their life.

Cleaning Pool Pavers

Different cleaning and maintenance instructions and methods should be used on pool pavers depending on the type and finish and also on whether they have been sealed or left in a natural state. In general, swimming pool pavers should be cleaned and maintained with non acidic products, and it is recommended to have them professionally cleaned every few years to extend their lifetime and restore the fresh look once the tiles start to look tired from daily use. Natural stone pavers should always be sealed using impregnating penetrating water-based sealers.

Outdoor pavers are exposed to the weather and the elements, including from the harsh sun and rain and as there is a swimming pool nearby there is also the exposure to the salt or chlorine water splashing from the swimming pool. In general, all porous tiles require sealing, especially outdoor stone tiles; bluestone, travertine and concrete pavers to name but a few.

travertine outdoor pool

It is very important to determine the type of sealer you will be using around your swimming pool, as different sealers are used for indoor and outdoor tiles, and also different sealers are used on different types of tiles, which is why we always recommend you consult a professional even if you have decided to seal the surface yourself.

Using an incorrect sealer can result in the sealer wearing off within a few weeks of application or the entire surface requiring grinding where solvent based sealers have been used.

What Exactly Is a Sealer?

A sealer is a liquid, or carrier containing a resin that is applied to porous natural stone or porous man made surfaces such as concrete, bluestone and travertine that helps prevent staining from water and/or oil based materials as well as helps to achieve better results when cleaning your pavers.

There are so many sealers on the market today and it can be confusing to know which sealer is the correct choice for your tile. Which one will work, which one won't, which sealer suits your situation and how they differ?

You can easily test how porous your surfaces are by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how it is absorbed. You can then see how any type of water based stain can be absorbed by the surface.

Sealing your tiles and/or grout helps prevent & reduce staining. It provides a barrier for a short time to remove the staining product and helps reduce the damage caused from the stain itself.

Types of sealers used on outdoor tiles

Water based sealers and solvent-based sealer's can both be used on outdoor tiles, however unless absolutely required for a specific reason, we always recommend applying a penetrating water based sealer that is UV resistant and won't alter the slip resistance of your outdoor surfaces. Water based sealers do not produce dangerous fumes on application and removal, are a lot easier to apply and remove and also require less drying time.

It is however important to know which type of water based sealer to use on your outdoor tiles, as most water based sealers will not last long outside as they are designed for internal use, so it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically designed for outside use.

You should always ensure that your tiles themselves are completely clean, before you attempt to seal the tile. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and help to ensure there won't be any dirt or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

Penetrating Sealers

Penetrating sealers work by sinking into the substrate and protecting from within. They deposit either a natural or synthetic resin into the pores of the tile and once the sealer is applied, the water or solvent evaporates and leaves the resin within the stone, which then hardens to form an invisible protecting barrier that prevents the stone from absorbing unwanted matter. The major benefit of penetrating sealers is that they allow the stone or tile to breathe and will never peel or scratch.

deepshield breathe

Tile Cleaners® recommend Australian Deepshield™ Deep Penetrating quality impregnating water based sealers for their outdoor tiles which are UV resistant and importantly wont alter the slip resistance of your surfaces, providing long-term stain resistance and reliability.

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects the tiles around your swimming pool and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores to create a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer such as Deepshield™ protects your outdoor tiles from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and once cured will not change the look of the stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Are pavers around swimming pools any different?

Outdoor tile is made to be sturdy, and to withstand a great deal of exposure from wind, rain, snow and other elements like swimming pool chemicals or salt. However, just because this tile is built to last for a long time, does not mean that it won't require some protection on your part. Over time, it's common for pool paver tiles to suffer from a wide variety of different problems, including staining, cracking and more. By sealing your paver tiles around your swimming pool, you protect them against damage and extend its life.

It is however important to know which type of water based sealer to use on your outdoor natural stone pavers, as many water based sealers will not last long outside as they are designed for internal use, so it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically made for outside use.

You should always ensure that the tiles themselves are completely clean, before you attempt to seal any tile. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and help to be sure that there won't be any dirt or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

Stripping Paver Tiles

As paver tiles may be sealed, the sealer may need to be removed and re-applied after it starts to wear off, this usually depends on type of sealer used, method used to apply it and the amount of traffic or use. This process is called stripping and sealing, and is usually required every 2-10 years depending on type of sealer, area used (indoor or outdoor), and amount of traffic or use.
