Testimonials

When I moved into my new house, I was shocked by how dirty and old the tiles in the entire house looked. I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be like that or if they were just really dirty. I decided to call Tile Cleaners and ask them to have a look and tell me what I could do to improve the look of my tiles. Tile Cleaners ® came the same weekend and managed to make my tiles look brand new. They also informed me that the sealer would protect my tiles for years to come. Amazing! Thank you guys! My floor looks gorgeous.

Amanda Burtender, Brighton East, VIC

We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again.

Olivia and Andrew Clark, Hornsby, NSW

I noticed that some of the tiles in my bathroom walls were loose and the grout was coming off. I am a very busy so kept on postponing calling someone to fix it. One day I got home and the loose tiles were lying broken on the floor. Can you imagine my frustration? I rang my brother in panic and he gave me Tile Cleaners' contact details. I rang them straight away. The guys told me I needed a tiler and professional regrouting work done so I thought it would take ages to fix my problem. However they organized the work very well. I had my tiles fixed on Friday night the same week and the entire bathroom regrouted on Saturday. Thank you some much for your quick help; it was such a relief.

What is Bluestone?

Bluestone is another name for the volcanic rock, Basalt. It is an extremely durable, hard stone with beautiful qualities that can vary dramatically from tile to tile. The stone itself is finely grained due to the rapid cooling of the lava as it reaches the earth's surface. Bluestone is usually grey to black in colour and was the favoured stone in the gold rush in Victoria with many significant Melbournian buildings being constructed with this type of stone.

Bluestone is extremely appealing visually and looks fantastic when utilised in paving, walling, and cobbles. Generally the attractive blue/grey types will cost a little more than the flat grey varieties. The surface of bluestone has tiny little holes that are created when the rock cools down. The term “cats paw” is used to describe a pattern of slightly larger holes running through the tile and can be an extremely attractive feature when it is present in the right amounts.

Different variations to Bluestone

The name “bluestone” is not a geological term and does not fall within any distinct category such as igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic. The name “bluestone” actually represents different rock types, so for example bluestone found in the UK can be different stone altogether when compared with the 2 prominent varieties of bluestone found in Australia. In Victoria, bluestone generally refers to a basalt, formed from the rapid cooling of lava, whereas in South Australia the name bluestone is generally given to a form of slate.

Bluestone can have many varying types and finishes. The surface of bluestone can be sawn giving it a non-slip surface, or honed making it smoother. Due to its hard composition bluestone can be brought to a semi polished or polished finish that will generally bring out the deeper colours in the stone.

The thickness of the stone will help determine the tile quality and lifetime. If you are having it laid outdoors Tile Cleaners® recommend a minimum thickness of 20mm for areas such as driveways, patios and landscaping. The additional thickness allows for expansion and contraction and of course increased durability.

Sealing Bluestone Tiles

Bluestone can be highly porous - although porosity will vary from piece to piece a tablespoon of water on a bluestone surface will be absorbed in seconds.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your bluestone and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your bluestone with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Sealing will keep most stains suspended at the surface, sealing is the first important step towards protecting your bluestone against stains

We cover all Adelaide suburbs, all Port Adelaide Enfield area and all surrounding suburbs to Birkenhead

Two main sealing options for bluestone tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects bluestone and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology, creating a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the bluestone surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years.

A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your bluestone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone whereas a penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® technicians are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your bluestone looks its absolute best. Our technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where your old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's usually have a life expectancy of around 3 year

Bluestone Floor Care & Maintenance

Bluestone is a porous natural stone that requires sealing to protect them against premature decay, contamination and staining from spills. A simple clean will sometimes not be enough to bring your tile or pavers back to a quality finish you wish to achieve. Sealing your bluestone and grout provides you with reaction time to deal with spills. An unsealed floor will stain immediately whereas a sealed floor can allow for a few hours of reaction.

Tile Cleaners® strongly recommend newly laid bluestone and grout be sealed as soon as they are installed ensuring they remain in top condition and your maintenance program is as easy as possible.

Proper cleaning and stain removal for bluestone floors will prolong its lifetime.

Do's:
  • Clean spill-ups right away
  • Seal bluestone whether freshly laid or existing
  • Cover high traffic areas with a mat
  • Use a Microfiber mop to clean floors
  • Use a acid free cleaning product
  • Sweep and mop floors regularly
Don'ts:
  • Never use bleach, ammonia or vinegar to clean bluestone floors
  • Don't use cleaners that are acidic
  • High amounts of water are not necessary
  • Never use an abrasive cleaner or scouring pad

Like any sealed tile or paver the more you prevent build up of dirt and grime the longer the sealer and consequently tile will last. Bluestone will require a certain amount of upkeep for it to maintain its beautiful appearance.

Quick removal of spills and stains prevents them from being absorbed into the bluestone.

Be sure to sweep the surface regularly and wipe with a damp mop at least once a week. Be sure not to leave any moisture on the surface to avoid it being absorbed.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will know it's time to have your bluestone floors stripped, cleaned and sealed once they begin to appear dull or "matte" even after you have given them an efficient regular clean. If you notice that your bluestone tiles are staining easily, it is a good indication that your previous sealer is wearing off and your bluestone floors will need to be resealed immediately to prevent permanent staining.

Yes, our tile cleaning services are safe! Tile Cleaners® generally use only the highest quality water based products alongside our state of the art cleaning machinery to provide the best cleaning solution without compromising your bluestone tiles. Stone tiles are porous and require more attention than man made tiles, which is why its extremely important to use the correct products and equipment necessary to bring your bluestone tiles back to their best possible condition. Tile Cleaners® prides itself on specifically catering for each tile variety.

Tile Cleaners® prefer to use high quality non-solvent based stripping and sealing products. These products are not messy and won't damage your bluestone tiles or anything else in your home. Current non-solvent based strippers and techniques are more than adequate. Tile Cleaners® technicians can apply solvent based strippers in very specific circumstances, however this requires leaving the premises for up to 48 hours and a very high level of safety and protection.

Tile Cleaning places a strong emphasis on the safety of your family during the cleaning process. They ensure that only non-toxic finishing agents are used, eliminating the presence of any potentially harmful substances or ingredients. Tile Cleaning takes great care in selecting cleaning products, specifically excluding any ingredients that could pose health risks. This commitment to safety not only helps preserve the condition of your stone tiles but also reflects Tile Cleaning's dedication to prioritizing the overall health and safety of your household. By choosing Tile Cleaning, you can have peace of mind knowing that the products used in the cleaning process are free from toxic ingredients.

Bluestone tiles stripping and sealing is simply the process of stripping the coating off the bluestone floor before resealing it. Bluestone flooring can look dull and lifeless over time, making it look older and really bringing down the feel of the home. By stripping and resealing, you can bring back the beautiful, lustrous appearance of your bluestone and eliminate the cost of laying new flooring.

Our professional team will go through the job processes with you step by step so you know exactly what you're getting. The process includes stripping any previous sealer if it was applied, the bluestone is then thoroughly cleaned and neutralised so that it is free of dust, residue and anything else that can affect the new sealer. A new sealer is applied to the dry bluestone floor and allowed to set. The newly sealed bluestone floor will not only look new again, it will be protected and result in your bluestone becoming easier to maintain.

It depends on the type of sealer used and the amount of foot traffic the bluestone tiles are being exposed to. Australia's Deepshield® range of deep impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits with Deepshield Gold® lasting up to 15 years. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years. If you have a high amount of foot traffic or perhaps severe weather conditions(for outdoor tiles), you may experience a shorter lifetime. Sealing your bluestone tiles can also depend on the tiles condition. Once they start showing patchy areas and are staining easily then you should have them resealed. Give us a call and we can assist you with all your enquiries.

Bluestone floors can damage easily, any oily or harsh spills can damage the bluestone tiles and penetrate the pores leaving a permanent stain, unreachable by domestic cleaning methods. We strongly recommend sealing you bluestone tiles to keep their natural look and feel, to protect them against permanent staining and to prevent any future accidental damage. They will look their very best for longer and will be easier and more convenient to maintain.

The best time to have your bluestone tiles sealed is immediately after installation to prevent any accidental staining or damage. You will know that your bluestone tiles need sealing once you start noticing patchy sealed areas of the floor and/or your bluestone tiles are staining easier.

Efflorescence is a problem that bluestone and most porous tiles can face. It's the tendency of the water in the bluestone to bring salts from the stone to the surface as it evaporates. The water evaporates leaving the salts on the surface resulting in a whitish coating and ruining its finish. The only way to avoid this problem is to seal your bluestone tiles with one of our highest quality water resistant sealer's and to stop the source of the water that is penetrating the tiles, for example a water pipe leak or damaged grout.

To keep your bluestone tiles and grout looking new, Tile Cleaners® recommend cleaning each week with a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime from the bluestone surface. Strong detergents(strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer, mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room or area. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

We recommend that you measure each bluestone area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

Move all furniture and items off the floor so it is ready for when we arrive.
