The name "bluestone" is not a geological term and does not fall within any distinct category such as igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic. The name "bluestone" represents different rock types, so for example bluestone found in the UK can be different stone altogether when compared with the 2 prominent varieties of bluestone found in Australia. In Victoria, bluestone generally refers to a basalt, formed from the rapid cooling of lava, whereas in South Australia the name bluestone is generally given to a form of slate. Bluestone can be used indoors and out – for cladding, paving, stairs, coping, kitchen and bathroom counter tops, pool surrounds, garden edging, commercial and domestic flooring and retaining walls. Bluestone has a high degree of slip resistance. Victorian bluestone will generally be black or grey, while bluestone slate has a more beige colour.

Like any natural stone, bluestone looks fabulous when it is cleaned and sealed but can look tired and unattractive when not maintained. Tile Cleaners® can restore your bluestone whether it is indoors or outdoors. If you notice your bluestone surfaces aren't coming up like they used to, let our team of professionals do a full restoration clean, restoring your surfaces back to their best possible condition.
Just cleaning bluestone to achieve an 'as new' look can be difficult due to the fact that your old sealer may be worn or in need of resealing. St Helena's Tile Cleaners® technicians will carry out a test to check if your bluestone is currently sealed, or to determine which type of sealer has been applied. Our qualified technicians and specialists will evaluate your bluestone and advise on what will need to be done in order to achieve a superior cleaning result.
What is Bluestone?
Our Cleaning Process
The porous nature of bluestone does require it to be sealed. If you are looking for the best outcome for your tired bluestone, Tile Cleaners® recommend a complete strip and seal. If you are selling or just want to have a professional extensive clean, we can certainly help.
The process we use to just clean your floors will be determined by the type of existing sealer and the state of your tiles. In some cases we will be able to use our high pressure machines to clean and extract as we go. Other floors may only require our eco-friendly products with a gentle microfibre hand clean. A thorough test will be carried out to see which approach will give you the best results possible without harming your bluestone.
Common General Bluestone Cleaning Mistakes
- Using an acid based cleaning to remove stains
- Using too much water and/or product drenching the stone and causing more staining
- Mopping the area with dirty water
- Not removing cleaning product residue
- Not wiping up excess moisture especially in the grout
Sealing Bluestone Tiles
Tile Cleaners® strongly recommend having your bluestone tiles sealed as soon as they are installed. Our team of experts specialise in resealing and initial sealing of natural stone to provide a barrier against stains and prolong the life of your tile. Sealing is the first important step towards protecting your investment against stains.

Sealing is the first important step towards protecting your investment against stains.
Two main sealing options exist for bluestone tiles
- Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
- Topical Sealer
(Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)
(Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)
A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects bluestone and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology to create a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the bluestone surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield® range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield Gold®, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years and is the best product for some denser varieties of bluestone. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of the bluestone surface.
Tile Cleaners® are experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your bluestone looks its absolute best. Tile Cleaners® experienced technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where the old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years.
You can easily test how porous your natural bluestone is by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how the water is absorbed by the bluestone. You can then see how any type of water based stain can be absorbed by the bluestone tile surface and grout.
Tips for Prolonging the Life of your Bluestone
Bluestone is a porous natural stone that requires sealing to protect them against premature decay, contamination and staining from spills. A simple clean will sometimes not be enough to bring your tile or pavers back to a quality finish you wish to achieve. Sealing your bluestone and grout provides you with reaction time to deal with spills. An unsealed floor will stain immediately whereas a sealed floor can allow for a few hours of reaction.
Tile Cleaners® strongly recommend newly laid bluestone and grout be sealed as soon as they are installed ensuring they remain in top condition and your maintenance program is as easy as possible.
We provide specialised cleaning, stripping & sealing solutions for Bluestone pavers and tiles.
Our equipment can handle both domestic and commercial cleaning jobs, leaving your floors spotless and hygienic.
