Testimonials

Thank you Tile Cleaners ® for dealing with the solvent sealer I had and resealing my hallway; I know it's a pain but you did a great job. I will definitely call you again as I need help with my tiles in the office.

Paul Gold, Gold Coast, QLD

When I moved into my new house, I was shocked by how dirty and old the tiles in the entire house looked. I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be like that or if they were just really dirty. I decided to call Tile Cleaners and ask them to have a look and tell me what I could do to improve the look of my tiles. Tile Cleaners ® came the same weekend and managed to make my tiles look brand new. They also informed me that the sealer would protect my tiles for years to come. Amazing! Thank you guys! My floor looks gorgeous.

Amanda Burtender, Brighton East, VIC

I have several different freshly laid tiles in my new house. All pathways have stone tiles and there are marble tiles in the bathrooms and porcelain in the kitchen. I needed to get them sealed and was not sure if it was possible to seal them all. I contacted Tile Cleaners because my dad recommended them. He had a similar situation in his house and was very happy with the job Tile Cleaners had done. I was very worried about my tiles since they were brand new and very expensive. Tile Cleaners team were very patient with me, explaining how they were going to apply the sealer on different types of tiles, what sealer they would use, how long it would last for and advised me on how to take care of my tiles. I called Tile Cleaners a few times confirming details, asking for prices, making sure they could to the job during the weekend etc. The guys were amazingly patient and helpful. When I had gathered all the information I wanted, I was ready to go ahead. The work done by Tile Cleaners actually took less time than what it took me looking for information about it. Sorry for the pain I caused, and again thank you.

Monica Petrovski, West Beach, SA

What is Sandstone?

Sandstone is very versatile building material that has found use since prehistoric times both due to its fairly common occurrence and excellent resistance to weathering. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized minerals, including mostly quartz or feldspar as well as calcite, gypsum or various iron compounds.

Like sand, sandstone has a granular texture and may be found in almost any color, with the most common colors being tan, brown, yellow, red, gray, pink, and white. Since sandstone beds often form highly visible cliffs and other topographic features, certain colors of sandstone have been strongly identified with certain regions.

Sandstone tiles are very porous and susceptible to scratches, stains and fracturing. Water and oil soluble contaminants can be readily absorbed, initiating a process of deterioration. It is important to follow proper sandstone tile cleaning methods.

Sealing Sandstone Floors

Two main sealing options exist for sandstone tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
    (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
    (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)
deepshield sandstone

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects sandstone and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology to create a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the sandstone surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield® range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield Gold®, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years. A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pores of your stone and, once cured will not change the look of the tile or stone. A penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your sandstone looks its absolute best. Tile Cleaners® experienced technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where the old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

You can easily test how porous your natural sandstone is by applying a drop of water to the surface and watching how the water is absorbed by the sandstone. You can then see how any type of water based stain can be absorbed by the sandstone tile surface and grout.

Types of sealer's used on sandstone tiles

Water based sealer's and solvent-based sealer's can both be used on sandstone, however unless absolutely required for a specific reason, we always recommend applying a water based sealer that doesn't produce harmful fumes during application and removal. Water based sealers are easier to apply and remove and also require less drying time. One of the most popular product ranges available is Australian made Deepshield® quality impregnating water based sealer's that prolong the life of your surfaces by taking full advantage of recent advancements in nano technology, providing unmatched long-term stain resistance and reliability.

It is important to ensure the correct water based sealer is applied to your sandstone tile, which will also depend on whether they are indoors or outdoors as most sealer's will not last long outside due to being designed for internal use. If your sandstone is outdoors, it is important to use a water based sealer that is specifically designed for outdoor sandstone. There are two types of impregnating clear sealer, water based sealer & solvent based. In the past solvent based sealers were more widely used as they used to absorb deeper into the sandstone and grout and would also last longer. Today however, thanks to new technological advancements, it is recommended only to use water based sealer's, that last much longer and cause less potential damage to health and property.

Solvent based products are more difficult to apply and can create major problems when applied incorrectly as they are very hard to remove. Tile Cleaners® recommend our clients apply a long lasting water based sealer such as a quality product from Australia's Deepshield® range of sealer's to their sandstone tiles and grout. Topical sealer's (glossy plastic coating over the top of the sandstone) are still used on sandstone, but these older style sealer's can trap moisture in the stone and make the surface slippery when wet. When a topical sealer wears in higher traffic areas, the entire surface usually needs to be stripped and re-sealed.

It is very important to ensure that tiles achieve their cleanest possible condition prior to being sealed. This will protect the appearance of the tile, and importantly ensure that there won't be any dirt, stains or other debris caught under the layer of sealant.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your sandstone and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your sandstone with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Sandstone tiles stripping and sealing is simply the process of stripping the coating off the sandstone floor before resealing it. Sandstone flooring can look dull and lifeless over time, making it look older and really bringing down the feel of the home. By stripping and resealing, you can bring back the beautiful, lustrous appearance of your sandstone and eliminate the cost of laying new flooring.

When you choose our professional team, we will guide you through each step of the job process to ensure complete transparency. Here's what you can expect during the resealing of your sandstone floors. First, if there is any previous sealer applied, it will be stripped off. Next, our team will thoroughly clean and neutralize the sandstone, removing all dust, residue, and any other substances that could impact the new sealer's effectiveness. Once the surface is dry, a new sealer will be carefully applied to the sandstone floor and left to set. The result will be not only a rejuvenated and fresh appearance for your sandstone, but also enhanced protection. The newly sealed sandstone will be easier to maintain, making your ongoing maintenance tasks more convenient. Throughout the process, our team will ensure clear communication and provide professional guidance to meet your expectations.

The frequency of sealing sandstone floors can vary depending on factors such as the type of sealer used and the level of foot traffic they receive. In Australia, the Deepshield™ range of deep impregnating water-based sealers is recommended, with the Transparent Penetrating Sealer offering protection for up to 10 years. Topical sealers typically have a lifespan of around 3 years. However, high foot traffic or severe weather conditions can result in a shorter lifespan. It's also important to consider the condition of the tiles. If you notice patchy areas and increased susceptibility to staining, it's a sign that resealing is needed. For specific inquiries and assistance, feel free to reach out to us.

Sandstone floors can damage easily, any oily or harsh spills can damage the sandstone tiles and penetrate the pores leaving a permanent stain, unreachable by domestic cleaning methods. We strongly recommend sealing you sandstone tiles to keep their natural look and feel, to protect them against permanent staining and to prevent any future accidental damage. They will look their very best for longer and will be easier and more convenient to maintain.

The optimal time to seal your sandstone tiles is right after installation to proactively protect them from potential staining and damage. To determine if your sandstone tiles currently require sealing, look out for signs such as patchy sealed areas on the floor or an increased susceptibility to staining. These indications suggest that the previous sealer may have worn off, making it necessary to reseal your sandstone tiles to maintain their appearance and safeguard them against potential stains.

Efflorescence is a problem that sandstone and most porous tiles can face. It's the tendency of the water in the sandstone to bring salts from the stone to the surface as it evaporates. The water evaporates leaving the salts on the surface resulting in a whitish coating and ruining its finish. The only way to avoid this problem is to seal your sandstone tiles with one of our highest quality water resistant sealer's and to stop the source of the water that is penetrating the tiles, for example a water pipe leak or damaged grout.

Yes we can. Efflorescence is a build up of salts and can be removed with efflorescence removers and other specialised cleaning techniques. Efflorescence is typically caused by a leakage behind the sandstone tiles or through damaged grout lines. The efflorescence can be removed but it is important the cause of the efflorescence is resoled.

To maintain the new look of your sandstone tiles, Tile Cleaning recommends weekly cleaning using a damp microfiber cloth and a mild detergent. This will effectively remove any dirt or grime from the surface. It is important to avoid using strong detergents or cleaners that are acidic or alkaline, as they can affect the sealer. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances for safe cleaning. To provide the best protection against staining and make regular maintenance easier, we highly recommend sealing your sandstone tiles with one of our highest quality sealers. Sealing not only safeguards your tiles but also enhances their longevity and appearance.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

We advise measuring each sandstone area individually. The easiest method is to multiply the width by the length of the area. For instance, if a room measures 3 meters in length and 2 meters in width, the total area would be calculated as 3 multiplied by 2, resulting in 6 square meters.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

Move all furniture and items off the floor so it is ready for when we arrive.
