Testimonials

I noticed that some of the tiles in my bathroom walls were loose and the grout was coming off. I am a very busy so kept on postponing calling someone to fix it. One day I got home and the loose tiles were lying broken on the floor. Can you imagine my frustration? I rang my brother in panic and he gave me Tile Cleaners' contact details. I rang them straight away. The guys told me I needed a tiler and professional regrouting work done so I thought it would take ages to fix my problem. However they organized the work very well. I had my tiles fixed on Friday night the same week and the entire bathroom regrouted on Saturday. Thank you some much for your quick help; it was such a relief.

Kerry McMyre, Mosman, NSW

When I moved into my new house, I was shocked by how dirty and old the tiles in the entire house looked. I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be like that or if they were just really dirty. I decided to call Tile Cleaners and ask them to have a look and tell me what I could do to improve the look of my tiles. Tile Cleaners ® came the same weekend and managed to make my tiles look brand new. They also informed me that the sealer would protect my tiles for years to come. Amazing! Thank you guys! My floor looks gorgeous.

Amanda Burtender, Brighton East, VIC

My mother's tiles were old and ugly, as she has been living in the same house her entire life without ever really taking care of her tiles. I called Tile Cleaners to get advice on what to do with them. They came to her house the next day to have a look at my mum's tiles. I am very satisfied with how patient and highly professional you were with my mother. I am sorry I couldn't be there when you arrived, and I am really impressed by how you managed to explain everything to my mom and help her out. Thank you for doing a great job.

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand-sized minerals or rock grains. Most sandstone is composed of quartz and/or feldspar, one of the most common minerals in the Earth's crust as well as calcite, gypsum or various iron compounds. Like sand, sandstone has a granular texture and may be found in almost any colour, but the most common colours are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, and white. Since sandstone beds often form highly visible cliffs and other topographic features, certain colours of sandstone have been strongly identified with certain regions.

Sandstone tiles vary in porosity and hardness however they are soft and porous on the other hand. Since Sandstone tiles can absorb water very fast, it is important to follow proper Sandstone tile restoration methods in every opportunity to ensure proper maintenance.

Sandstone floors can be prone to scratching, staining and fracturing. The tiles should also be allowed to breath instead of being covered by synthetic sealers or urethane. Tile Cleaners® offer the best solution to protect your sandstone using highly penetrating impregnating water based sealers, creating a barrier that provides protection against chemical attack, deterioration and contamination.

The primary cause for sandstone floors becoming dull and lacklustre is foot traffic. Prolonged use will grind and pack in dust, sand and grit. Although the scratching that occurs is very fine, it eventually covers the majority of the surface and over time dulls the finish to the point where it loses its reflective properties. To make your stone surfaces smooth and reflective, we employ the use of high speed polishers.

Many older buildings have durable sandstone flooring, the chalky porous type with a smooth granular surface typical of most French and Spanish sandstone. This variety does stain easier than marble, varies in hardness and does become etched by acids including soft drink, as well as absorb oils and other liquids. Common colours are black, grey, white, yellow and brown. Sandstone should be sealed with a penetrating sealer to prevent staining and reduce soiling and should only be cleaned with neutral pH detergents. Because it is soft, sandstone should never be cleaned at pressures above 800 PSI and then only if the grout is in good condition.

Sandstone Paving Grey Restoration favicon.icoProfessional regular maintenance will be required to maintain the honed or polished appearance of sandstone. Sandstone looks best with a honed or low/medium sheen appearance however some people insist on a high shine finish. Some low calcite Sandstone can be extremely difficult to polish and therefore vitrification would be required, vitrification however can give the stone an unnatural plastic appearance if repeated too often.

Sandstone Tile Restoration Before & After favicon.ico

Sandstone can be highly porous - although porosity will vary from piece to piece a tablespoon of water on a sandstone surface will be absorbed in seconds. Porosity is also affected by the finish - highly polished sandstone is a little harder to penetrate than surfaces with a honed(matte) finish.

To provide the best possible protection from oil and water-based stains; to maintain the look and slip resistance of your sandstone and to prevent damaging moisture from being trapped within the stone, it is recommended to seal your sandstone with a high quality, invisible, fully breathable impregnating sealer.

Sandstone's calcite composition makes it susceptible to acid attack from spilt food and drink. Its high porosity can also mean oil will permeate the surface and leave stains when not properly sealed with a penetrating/impregnating sealer. Sealing your sandstone will keep most stains suspended at the surface, sealing is the first important step towards protecting your sandstone against stains.

Two main sealing options exist for sandstone tiles

  • Deep Penetrating Impregnating Sealer
  • (Transparent Finish/Colour Enhancing Finish)

  • Topical Sealer
  • (Gloss/Satin/Matte Finish)

deepshield surface

A deep penetrating impregnating sealer protects sandstone and grout from water and oil based stains by chemically reacting with the surface pores using nano-technology, creating a breathable protective barrier. An impregnating sealer protects the sandstone surface and grout from absorbing stains while also resulting in cleaning and maintenance becoming much easier. Australia's Deepshield™ range of impregnating water based sealer's, offer long term benefits lasting for up to 10 years while Deepshield™ Gold, based on the latest fluoro-bond technology lasts for up to 15 years.

A penetrating impregnating transparent sealer enters the pore structure of your sandstone and once cured, will not change the look of the tile or stone whereas a penetrating colour enhancing sealer is designed to enhance and enrich the natural look of stone surfaces.

Tile Cleaners® technicians are the experts at applying all types of sealer and will ensure your sandstone looks its absolute best. Our technicians can apply a topical sealer when especially required to create a high gloss, satin sheen or matte finish to your surfaces. Topical sealer is also helpful in situations where your old solvent based sealer can not be completely removed or when required to hide certain types of damage. Topical sealer's usually have a life expectancy of around 3 years.

Pre-Sealing Preparation

  • Any surface to be sealed should be clean and looking just as you want it before it is sealed - it may be impossible to remove stains after sealing without once again having to strip the sealer. Acidic cleaners should not be used on sandstone as they will cause damage.
  • Sandstone must have no other coating such as wax or a topical sealer before it's sealed, so any such coating must be removed before sealing.
  • Floor must be thoroughly dry before applying any sealer.

Protection from Acid Etching

It is very difficult to seal Sandstone against acid attack.
It is very difficult to seal sandstone against acid attack. Sandstone and other calcite based stone such as marble and travertine are prone to acid etching. Sandstone is immediately 'etched' (eaten/corroded) by any acidic material on contact - including lemon juice, cola, wine and champagne. For this reason the honed(matte) look is popular, as it doesn't show etch marks as much as polished

Sandstone Floor Care & Maintenance

Sandstone can be difficult to maintain if a proper maintenance cycle is not put in place from the point of installation. As it is usually not polished, the problem of scratching is not as big an issue as it is with marble, however if proper barrier matting is not introduced even a honed surface will lose its attractiveness. The most important factor to consider with the maintenance of sandstone is the possibility of staining.

Sandstone Stripping

Stripping, scrubbing and cleaning to remove old sealant and its residue, restoring the original appearance of the floor. Our technicians are equipped with all necessary equipment and possess all skills and experience needed to provide your sandstone tiles with an extensive floor stripping service. We can strip and reseal any hard surface flooring as well as wall tiles.

Sandstone Grinding

Grinding will smooth out imperfections and open a new layer upon which it is possible to build a high quality honed or polished finish. Grinding will remove deep scratches, stains and other contaminations from your sandstone, resulting in a very smooth and even surface. Grinding will also remove any lippage, the term used for uneven tiles which can occur after a typical installation.

Sandstone Honing

Honed sandstone surfaces have a more satin-feel, smooth and velvety to the touch often more suited to casual, comfortable environments than more formal polished surfaces. Honing your floors is a fantastic way to virtually eliminate taxing maintenance requirements while still having the wonderful characteristic of beautiful stone surfaces in your home or business.

Sandstone Polishing

Polishing is achieved by using very fine grade abrasive diamond discs until a reflective finish is achieved. These final grades reduce scratches which are not even visible to the human eye allowing the natural crystals on the surface to reflect light more effectively. Highly polished floors have much smaller pores to collect soil, dirt and grime, ensuring maintenance is made a lot easier.

Efflorescence Treatment

Efflorescence is the formation of salt deposits on or near the surface of the tile and grout. Tile Cleaners® technicians have a variety of equipment for the effective removal of efflorescence. Yes, our sandstone tile cleaning services are safe! At Tile Cleaners ® we use only the best water based products alongside our state of the art cleaning machinery to provide the best cleaning solutions at no compromise to your sandstone tiles condition. Stone based tiles are usually more porous and require a lot more attention than regular man made tiles, that's why its extremely important to use the right products and equipment necessary for bringing your sandstone tiles back to their best possible condition. Tile Cleaners® prides itself for catering for each tile type.

Here at Tile Cleaners® we understand the importance of your family's safety. This is why Tile Cleaners® prefer to use non-toxic finishing agents as we not only want to protect your sandstone floors, but your families health too. Materials and agents that present potential health hazards are not in our product portfolio and never have been.

To maintain the new look of your sandstone tiles, Tile Cleaning recommends weekly cleaning using a damp microfiber cloth and a mild detergent. This will effectively remove any dirt or grime from the surface. It is important to avoid using strong detergents or cleaners that are acidic or alkaline, as they can affect the sealer. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances for safe cleaning. To provide the best protection against staining and make regular maintenance easier, we highly recommend sealing your sandstone tiles with one of our highest quality sealers. Sealing not only safeguards your tiles but also enhances their longevity and appearance.

If the stain is relatively new and has not deeply penetrated the surface, there is a good chance that we can remove it or significantly improve its appearance. However, we cannot guarantee complete removal of all stains, as some may have settled deeply within the natural stone and prove challenging to eliminate entirely. It is crucial to consider having our team strip, clean, and seal your sandstone floor to provide enhanced protection against future staining. This proactive approach will help safeguard your sandstone and minimize the likelihood of stains in the future.

Tile Cleaners® charge per square meter for each separate room. There is a price list on the Tile Cleaners® website for you to review. Before we begin our work we will measure each room individually, confirm the work to be carried out as well as confirm all costs with you.

We advise measuring each sandstone area individually. The easiest method is to multiply the width by the length of the area. For instance, if a room measures 3 meters in length and 2 meters in width, the total area would be calculated as 3 multiplied by 2, resulting in 6 square meters.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

Move all furniture and items up off the floor so it is ready for us to clean when we arrive.
