What is Porcelain?

Porcelain, one of the worlds most popular types of flooring is a highly durable and stain resistant product which receives its name from the Italian word “Porcellana”(cowrie shell) because of its resemblance to the translucent surface of the shell. Porcelain tiles are available in a wide variety of colours, textures and shapes and commonly mirror natural stone surfaces.

Porcelain is a ceramic material created by heating varieties of clay and other natural materials in a kiln to temperatures reaching 1,450°C, producing vitreous, or glassy qualities such as translucence and low porosity. Usually white or off-white, porcelain comes in both glazed and unglazed varieties. Properties associated with porcelain include, toughness, whiteness, translucency and a high resistance to chemical attack, thermal shock and liquid staining.

Porcelain tiles are available in a natural, polished or glazed finish and cleaning methods differ for each type of porcelain tile flooring. Because porcelain tile is fire-hardened and quite hard, it can be cleaned at pressures up to 1,300 PSI if the grout is in good condition.

Types of Porcelain Tiles

There are a few varieties of porcelain tiles:

  • Natural Porcelain Tile: Porcelain tiles that have not been polished or glazed which are very porous.
  • Polished Porcelain Tile: Although these polished tiles have a finish, they are not glazed and therefore need to be sealed, however most polished porcelain tiles in Australia today come pre-sealed from the factory, and do not require sealing. You will however need arrange a professional to clean and polish the area after installation to bring out the brand new finish you paid for.
  • Glazed Porcelain Tile: Like glazed ceramic, glazed porcelain tiles may be the best option for kitchens due to their strength, stain resistance, and low water absorption.

What is the difference between standard "Ceramic" tiles and Porcelain tiles?

Most tiles that are made from clay or a mixture of clay and other materials, then kiln-fired are considered to be a part of the larger classification known as "Ceramic Tiles". These tiles can be split into two groups, porcelain tiles and non-porcelain tiles. These non-porcelain tiles are frequently referred to as ceramic tiles.

Scratch resistance: Porcelain tile is more scratch resistant than ceramic tile. Porcelain is made from a finer, more dense clay, which results in a more dense, harder body. Also, porcelain tile is fired at higher temperatures than ceramic, resulting in superior durability and stain resistance.

Water resistance: Porcelain tile is far more resistant to water than ceramic tile. The absorption rate for porcelain tiles is 0.5% and even less.

Maintenance: Glazed porcelain tile maintenance is as simple as a quick sweep and a mop when necessary, however if your choice of tile is natural or polished porcelain, be sure that your floor is properly sealed otherwise cleaning could get more difficult!

Porcelain Tile Care

  • Sweep your porcelain tile regularly to keep it free from dirt that may become ground into the grout.
  • Washing your grout lines with soapy water and a cloth should be enough for routine cleaning of your porcelain tile.
  • If your porcelain tile is on the walls, ensure the walls are washed regularly.
  • If your tile is in the bathroom area, keep the grout as dry as possible, which may include toweling down your walls after you shower or bathe.
  • Sealing the grout between your tiles is important to keep it looking clean.
  • Sealed grout will repel water better and is smoother and easier to sweep. .

We often get asked to recommend a sealer for porcelain tiles, the simple answer is if they are glazed then the tiles usually don't require sealing, but the grout lines should always be sealed with a water based impregnating penetrating sealer, however if your porcelain tiles are porous then we recommend you seal the tiles with a high quality water based sealer such as Australian Deepshield™ Penetrating Impregnating Sealer.

deepshield Porcelain

Certain varieties of porcelain tile will require an impregnating sealer to fill the micro pores on the tile surface. Deepshield™ Gold ultra premium sealer is specially designed to penetrate denser materials such as porcelain, porcelain, granite and marble, offering peace of mind by forming a barrier between the micro pores of your porcelain and potential water and oil based stains, while preserving the tile's appearance and resulting in maintenance being made much easier.

Australian made non-toxic Deepshield™ Gold impregnating sealer performs well on porcelain and ceramic tiles and also provides excellent protection to the typically cement based grout lines against water and oil based stains.

Sealing your porcelain will keep most stains suspended at the surface, creating a barrier that provides protection against chemical attack, deterioration and contamination.

Porcelain Tile Care

Cleaning porcelain tile is not too difficult if you use the correct cleaning products and procedures. Using improper cleaning products and techniques can actually harm your porcelain tiles as well as the grout.

Cleaning porcelain tile requires the four basic components necessary for cleaning any surface. In the cleaning industry the acronym for these four cleaning components is TACT and they stand for:

deepshield moisture porcelain
  • Temperature: The higher the temperature the more effective the cleaning process.
  • Agitation: Agitation of the surface is necessary to generate effective cleaning results.
  • Chemicals: The proper cleaning products for the surface to be cleaned.
  • Time: The longer the cleaning products are allowed to work on the dirt and stains the better your cleaning results will be.

Here are some tile care tips on maintaining your porcelain tile:
  • Purchase a good quality dust mop and sweep your porcelain tile floors daily. This is especially important in new installations where the grout has not fully cured. Dirt, mud, and sand tend to ground into the grout mortar from heavy foot traffic.
  • Dirt collecting carpet mats should be placed in frequently used entrances and shaken out weekly.
  • Shower stall and tub enclosures should have proper ventilation. Stagnant water breeds stain causing mildew as well as other fungi. All inside and outside corners of shower walls, curbs, and sills, should be caulked with a siliconise mildew resistant caulk.
  • Mop or sponge your tiles 2 to 3 times weekly. Mix 1 capful of dishwashing liquid per 3 litres of hot water. Mop up excess water and allow to dry. Buffing with a dry towel will help to reduce spotting.

Glazed Porcelain Tiles are Easy to Maintain, however the grout lines should always be sealed to protect from discolouration as well as keep them easy to maintain

Getting White Grout Clean

For white or light coloured grout or for particularly tough mold or mildew stains, consider bleach. You can purchase a bleach-based cleaner or mix a 50/50 solution of bleach and water to clean stubborn grout stains.

When using bleach or bleach-based cleaners, be sure to have proper ventilation to remove harmful fumes. Also, be sure to wear gloves and older clothing. Never mixed bleach-based cleaners with other substances; toxic fumes can be generated from these types of mixtures. Ensure all bleach is properly rinsed.

A Mild Grout Cleaning Alternative

Another alternative grout cleaning solution is hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is an effective grout cleaner that doesn't produce odours. As an added benefit, hydrogen peroxide is the perfect cleaner for those with allergies or sensitivities to harsh chemicals. Simply apply some hydrogen peroxide to your grout and allow it to sit for several minutes. Brush the treated grout and then rinse with a damp cloth or mop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tile Cleaning offer comprehensive grout cleaning services that involve utilizing specialized tools and equipment such as Turbo Hybrid Machines and Scrubbers. These advanced machines are employed to scrub the grout, effectively restoring it to its optimal condition. In larger areas, the machines are used to achieve efficient and consistent results. However, in smaller or hard-to-reach spaces where machine usage is not feasible, the grout cleaning is performed manually with meticulous attention to detail. Regardless of the method employed, Tile Cleaning' services are designed to deliver remarkable outcomes and bring your grout back to its best possible state.

To measure the size of an area that requires grout restoration, it is advisable to measure each section or room individually. The most straightforward method is to multiply the width of the area by its length. For instance, if a room measures 3 meters in length and 2 meters in width, the total area would be calculated as 3 meters multiplied by 2 meters, resulting in 6 square meters (6m²). By measuring each area separately using this method, you can accurately estimate the total area that requires grout restoration, facilitating better planning and ensuring appropriate quantities of materials are used.

The appropriate time to address the grout's condition is when it begins to appear lackluster and stained, despite thorough cleaning efforts. At this stage, when the grout loses its shine and retains discoloration, it indicates the need for attention and maintenance.

At Tile Cleaning, we prioritize the safety of your family and understand its significance. That's why we have chosen to utilize non-toxic finishing agents in our grout cleaning products. We are not only dedicated to safeguarding and maintaining the quality of your ceramic floors but also to preserving the well-being of your loved ones. We ensure that our product portfolio does not include any materials or agents that pose potential health hazards. This commitment to safety has always been integral to our practices at Tile Cleaning.

A comprehensive grout maintenance routine generally involves two key steps: stripping and cleaning, followed by resealing. It is advisable to perform these tasks at least once every year or two, particularly in commercial areas that experience heavy foot traffic, where an annual cleaning schedule is recommended. By implementing this routine, you can effectively maintain the condition and longevity of your grout, ensuring its cleanliness and durability over time.

To maintain the pristine appearance of your tiles and grout, Tile Cleaners® suggests a few important steps. First and foremost, we recommend sealing your grout lines using our highly effective water-based impregnating grout sealer, Deepshield™ Penetrating Grout Sealer. This proven product helps protect your grout from stains and discoloration, keeping it looking fresh. Additionally, we advise regular weekly cleaning using a damp microfiber cloth and a mild detergent. This gentle cleaning routine helps eliminate dirt and grime from the tiled surface without compromising the integrity of the sealer. It's crucial to avoid using strong detergents with acidic or alkaline properties, as they may negatively affect the sealer. Instead, opt for mild detergents and pH-neutral substances for optimal results. By following these guidelines, you can effectively preserve the appearance and longevity of your grout, ensuring it stays looking new for years to come.

At Tile Cleaning, we follow a per square meter pricing structure for stripping, cleaning, and sealing grout in each separate room. To provide transparency and convenience, we have a price list available on our website for you to review. Prior to commencing any work, our team will measure each room individually and discuss the specific tasks to be performed. We will also ensure that all costs are confirmed with you, so there are no surprises along the way. Our aim is to provide clarity and clarity when it comes to pricing, ensuring your satisfaction with our services.

However, it is important to note that while our insurance covers our restoration services, we cannot be held responsible for any damage that may occur to furniture or property when our technicians assist with moving items at your request. We prioritize caution and care during the process, but it's advisable to take precautions and consider the specific requirements and risks associated with moving your furniture.

To facilitate the grout cleaning process and ensure our ability to effectively clean and restore your grout, it is necessary for you to prepare the area beforehand. This involves moving all furniture and items off the floor, allowing us unobstructed access to the grout. By taking this step and ensuring a clear workspace, we can efficiently carry out the cleaning procedure upon our arrival.

Tile Cleaning utilizes a low-pressure, hot water system for grout cleaning. Our advanced vapor system heats water to high temperatures, reaching up to 320 degrees. This vapor technology effectively cleans your grout by utilizing tap water, without the need for harsh chemicals. The process leaves your grout in a pH-neutral state, ensuring a thorough and environmentally friendly cleaning outcome. Our focus is on utilizing innovative and safe methods to achieve optimal results while maintaining the integrity of your grout.

In certain cleaning scenarios, the use of a chemical cleaner may be necessary as a pre-treatment. However, it's important to note that the chemical cleaner employed by Tile Cleaning contains no acid or bleach, as these ingredients can cause long-term damage to your grout. Following the application of the chemical solution, our vapor technology is utilized to remove discoloration and eliminate any residual chemical residue from the grout joints. It is worth mentioning that in cases where the grout is old and significantly discolored, there might be instances where we need to use chemicals that contain a minimal amount of bleach or acid. Rest assured, our aim is always to prioritize the safety and preservation of your grout while achieving the best possible cleaning outcomes.

The vapour cleaning process eliminates the cleaner from the pores of the joint leaving it in a PH neutral state.

The use of grout cleaner and vapor cleaning offers distinct advantages over simply scrubbing the grout with a brush and mopping it clean. When grout is only mopped after applying cleaner, the excess cleaner is not fully absorbed, resulting in residue left within the pores of the grout. This residual cleaner can disrupt the pH level of the floor, potentially creating an environment that attracts dirt and grime even after the cleaning process is complete. In contrast, the vapor cleaning method ensures the complete removal of the cleaner from the grout, leaving it in a pH neutral state. This approach promotes a thorough and long-lasting clean, minimizing the risk of residue buildup and maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of your grout over time.

Tile Cleaning may use a truck-mounted cleaning machine in certain situations, taking into account the size and requirements of the job. The equipment is capable of generating pressure ranging from 1500 to 3000 psi. However, it is important to note that we adjust the pressure according to the specific type of tile and grout being treated. This precautionary measure is crucial to prevent any potential damage. Using the incorrect pressure can result in the formation of small cracks in the grout joint or exacerbate existing cracks. By carefully adjusting the pressure, we ensure that the cleaning process is effective while safeguarding the integrity of your grout and tile surfaces.

Recolouring grout is the application of a grout colorant to completely change or enhance the colour of your grout.

In some circumstances, your existing grout can be soiled to the point it will not clean well enough to be acceptable. Grout can also fade if exposed to excessive foot traffic or sunlight making it impossible to eliminate colour variations in your grout.

Yes, your existing grout can be re-coloured to a lighter or darker shade of your existing grout or a different colour altogether to match your changing decor.

The recolouring process will leave your grout looking brand new eliminating any colour variations. The colour sealer used is a penetrating colour sealer leaving the grout in its natural state as it bonds to the silica in the grout joint. Some colour sealers on the market are topical that will cause your grout to look painted in its completed state.
