I noticed that some of the tiles in my bathroom walls were loose and the grout was coming off. I am a very busy so kept on postponing calling someone to fix it. One day I got home and the loose tiles were lying broken on the floor. Can you imagine my frustration? I rang my brother in panic and he gave me Tile Cleaners' contact details. I rang them straight away. The guys told me I needed a tiler and professional regrouting work done so I thought it would take ages to fix my problem. However they organized the work very well. I had my tiles fixed on Friday night the same week and the entire bathroom regrouted on Saturday. Thank you some much for your quick help; it was such a relief.

Kerry McMyre, Mosman, NSW

My mother's tiles were old and ugly, as she has been living in the same house her entire life without ever really taking care of her tiles. I called Tile Cleaners to get advice on what to do with them. They came to her house the next day to have a look at my mum's tiles. I am very satisfied with how patient and highly professional you were with my mother. I am sorry I couldn't be there when you arrived, and I am really impressed by how you managed to explain everything to my mom and help her out. Thank you for doing a great job.

Angela Coopers, Concord, NSW

We got our tiles more than 25 years ago. We were told that we had a solvent sealer on our tiles, which apparently most companies wouldn't be able to strip off. However we rang a couple of places to check them out. No luck. A friend of mine recommended Tile Cleaners. We rang the guys and they agreed to have a look the next day. We decided to go ahead with the job after getting a satisfactory quote. Tile Cleaners team stripped and resealed our old tiles. We are very grateful for your help guys. Thank you again.

Polished Concrete

Is that really concrete?

Concrete in most cases will not conjure thoughts of beautiful and aesthetically appealing environments, still we use concrete almost without exception in all buildings we construct.

Concrete has been around for centuries, the Romans widely used concrete to build some of their most impressive constructions (the Pantheon in Rome was built in about 120AD and is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world). Around the Mediterranean, aqueducts, drainage systems and amphitheatres built using concrete 2000 years ago can still be found. It wasn't until the 1990s however that concrete was discovered (by accident) to produce the highly durable and attractive surfaces we know today as polished concrete.

Long relegated to life as a sub-floor, interior concrete slabs have been hidden under flooring materials such as carpet, hardwood, vinyl or ceramic tile. But why waste resources and money to add another layer of flooring when you can simply leave the concrete exposed?

When considering the life-span of an overlayment, the process represents expensive installation, ongoing maintenance and eventual replacement costs, however in all circumstances the underlying structural concrete remains. Polishing concrete eliminates the need for overlayments by converting the actual existing concrete into an economical, durable and low maintenance finished surface with spectacular visual appeal.

How is it done?

How does the concrete become so shiny?

Concrete polishing is a fast and inexpensive method of grinding and polishing pre-existing concrete surfaces with diamond sharp disks to create smooth, attractive and highly durable flooring. Existing slabs can be ground and polished to create very hard wearing, scratch and stain resistant surfaces that will not chip or peel and are extremely easy to maintain.

To achieve a smooth, glossy surface, our technicians start by using grinding machines with rotating diamond-abrasive heads to remove the surface layer of the concrete in order to level the floor and remove any deep scratches. Following the initial stage, finer diamond-abrasives are progressively used (usually starting at 40 grit going up to 3,000 grit) to reveal or expose the aggregate within the slab (new or existing slab).

Typically, concrete is not considered polished before 400 grit which is known as honed concrete, polished concrete is normally finished to either the 800, 1500, or 3000 grit level depending on the shine and reflection specified. Polished concrete is measured in grades and finishes: the higher the grade, the larger the exposed aggregates; similarly, the higher the finish, the shinier the polish.

At one stage during the grinding process, sodium silicate is applied to the concrete in order to increase its density, or harden the concrete. The sodium silicate solution is absorbed into the concrete, filling the pores. A chemical reaction then occurs with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete further strengthening and crystallising the material.

Further grinding with progressively finer diamonds creates a very smooth surface and when completed also provides a high degree of sheen. (The surface instead of having a pitted surface that refracts light will reflect light from off of the floor.)

Because polishing is a multi-step process, you can choose the level of sheen from satin to high-gloss, that meets your maintenance and aesthetic requirements. This versatility makes polished concrete an ideal flooring material for a variety of applications.

If you're installing a new concrete floor, the choices of textures, colours, and finishes are nearly limitless. Texture and finish are determined by the grade of concrete used, how it's poured, and the polishing process. Colour can be introduced in several ways: Pigment can be mixed into wet concrete to achieve any desired colour (coloured aggregates, too, such as stones, marbles, and pieces of glass, can be added), or an acid- or water-based stain can be used to colour dry concrete.

WANT A FLOOR THAT LOOKS AMAZING, IS EASY TO CLEAN AND DURABLE?

Polished concrete can range from a paste polish, where the final colour is uniform with no aggregate visible, all the way to a deep polish where large aggregate is exposed, closely resembling terrazzo.

  • Cream polished concrete floor
  • This is a very popular style that simply polishes the cream at the top level of the concrete not exposing any of the sand or aggregate. A cream polish will give you the smoothest and most consistent sheen possible, which is easy to clean and maintain. Cream polished concrete finishes can range from low gloss matte to a high gloss mirror finish.

  • The salt and pepper polished concrete floor

This look has a fine aggregate exposure and is produced by removing a very thin top layer of the concrete during the initial grinding process to expose some of the sand aggregate. The exposed sand resembles salt and pepper and provides a nice colour accent to the concrete without the addition of stains or dyes.

  • Light aggregate exposure polished concrete floor
  • Medium exposure to reveal the top side of the aggregates. This concrete floor style has a light aggregate exposure with little to no large aggregate exposure spread randomly.

  • Heavy aggregate exposure polished concrete floor
  • Heavy exposure to reveal the maximum size of aggregate. This finish has a large aggregate exposure with little to none fine aggregate exposure which is spread randomly.

Concrete Polishing offers a wide selection of finishes

  • Ground concrete (20 to 100 Grit grinding)
  • Honed concrete (200 to 400 Grit polishing)
  • Low Sheen Polishing (400 to 800 Grit polishing)
  • High Shine Polishing (800 to 3000 Grit polishing)

Energy Efficiency

Concrete floors are ideal for passive solar home designs. Concrete floors shielded from the sun will stay cool for longer and can actually help lower air-conditioning costs, conversely in the cooler months concrete floors will absorb the heat from direct sunlight and release the stored heat as needed at night to keep rooms warmer.

Low Maintenance

Polished concrete floors are low maintenance, more hard wearing and more likely to withstand pressure than other flooring options, they do not require aggressive cleaners or brushes to lift dirt away.

Mopping with warm soapy water once a week is the only maintenance required. A concrete floor that has been hardened and polished has an extremely long life expectancy when compared to other flooring. For example, standard floor coverings may only last 10–20 years, but a polished concrete floor that has been properly maintained can easily give 100+ years of service.

If your polished concrete is situated in a large work space or puplic space, an auto-scrubber can be used with super soft brushes and a gentle cleaner designed for polished concrete, to suspend dirt off the floor and squeegee it up.

Concrete floors are more enduring and easier to clean than many flooring options. A well maintained, regularly cleaned concrete floor will last for decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many suspect a highly polished concrete floor would become more slippery-and thus more of a problem. Contrary to common perception, the degree of polish or shine is not directly related to slip resistance. Just because polished concrete is shiny doesn't mean it is slippery. If the right processes are applied both internally and/or externally, testing has shown that polished concrete will meet or exceed Australia/New Zealand standards for slip resistance. (Please bear in mind any floor finish can become slippery when wet.)

The duration required to complete concrete polishing varies depending on the size of the area. For larger projects, such as expansive floors, it may take up to three days to complete the polishing process. On the other hand, polishing a smaller surface like a bench-top can typically be finished within half a day. Professional services like Tile Cleaners® strive to minimize disruptions by aiming to complete the work within the same day, ensuring your home or business experiences as little interruption as possible.

Almost any concrete floor. Floors which are saturated with oil, or are in environments where they will constantly be exposed to acids, are probably not ideal for a polished concrete floor. Whether a new construction or a 100 year old slab, most concrete floors can benefit greatly from the aesthetic, durability, and longevity of polishing.

Most concrete sealers dry fairly quickly and are usually touch-dry after 4 hours. This is true of both penetrating and topical sealers. Penetrating sealers usually fully cure in 24 hours with topical sealers generally taking up to 48 hours to fully dry.

Mechanical, dry-grind concrete polishing is a fairly clean process, grinding will create a slurry, and can get a bit messy, but with the dry-grind process, a vacuum system is used in conjunction with the grinder to contain 98% of the airborne particles. The remainder of the dust is then easily swept up and removed in plastic bags.

Your new polished concrete floor, with the proper care, will last a lifetime. But like anything else, your surfaces will need a little attention from time to time to make sure they are holding up against the demands you place on it.

Polished concrete on its own is quite stain resistant, but many solutions can seep into the pores to create a stain, or even etch the floor. A sealer will line the pores to keep most stains suspended at the surface of the concrete, not allowing the stain to penetrate the floor and further preventing the likelihood of staining.

Concrete surfaces are subject to deterioration and degradation of appearance through traffic, UV rays, moisture, rain, chemicals, and other impurities such as oil, gas, grease, acids and salt. This can easily result in common problems such as cracking, pitting, scaling, spalling, delamination, dusting, discolouration, efflorescence, salt damage, etc. Concrete sealing offers excellent maintenance benefits when quality products are used such as Australia's Deepshield™ deep impregnating sealers.

Polished concrete is one of the most sustainable flooring options today. Polishing the structural slab of a building, instead of harvesting resources to cover it, prevents waste and is extremely long lasting.

Polished concrete pricing is basically dependent upon how many levels of grinding will be required to get the floor to a suitably smooth surface.

No, it is not possible to apply penetrating concrete sealers over existing topical sealers. Topical sealers create a membrane or film on the surface of the concrete, forming a barrier that prevents the penetrating sealers from effectively absorbing into the concrete. Therefore, before applying a penetrating sealer, it is necessary to remove any existing topical sealer to ensure proper penetration and adhesion of the new sealer. This preparation step ensures that the penetrating sealer can effectively provide the desired protection and enhance the durability of the concrete surface.

To maintain the condition of your polished concrete, it is recommended to clean it using a pH-neutral cleaner. This type of cleaner is gentle and does not damage the polished surface. After applying the pH-neutral cleaner, rinse the area with clean water to remove any residue. In case of spills, it is advisable to promptly clean them up using clean water. Additionally, to eliminate dust and keep the surface clean, using a microfiber mop is recommended. This method of cleaning helps to preserve the polished appearance of the concrete while ensuring that it remains free from dirt and debris.

Yes, however it is always best to use a pH neutral cleaner to suspend the dirt so it can be cleaned off the floor instead of just spread around on the floor and leaving a hazy film on the surface.

When laying a new slab, a wide range of coloured concretes and coloured aggregates are available for you to choose from.

Yes and the best thing about it is that it will never be as involved as the initial process. Normally it will only take a couple of steps to reach the end result required.

Polished concrete flooring can be walked on during the grind and polish process. There is no 'cure' time since it is a mechanical process. If a sealer is used, 4 hours is typically required before foot traffic can be resumed.

Yes, our tile cleaning services are safe! Tile Cleaners® generally use only the highest quality water based products alongside our state of the art cleaning machinery to provide the best cleaning solution without compromising your concrete surfaces.

The process is virtually dust free. There is no airborne dust due to the use of Hepa filter vacuum systems. There will be some residual dust left on the floor but it will be vacuumed up between steps by another filtered vacuum. A little dust is created when using hand held grinders, however this is removed between each grinding stage.

In most cases yes we can. The concrete would have to be in very poor condition not to be able to achieve a polished concrete finish.

It will be necessary to "hand" finish against fixed obstacles. Our technicians will do this during the process.

As a general rule, concrete should be allowed to cure for 28 days prior to grinding.

No, we specialize in the polishing or grinding of the concrete, however we do have concreters that we work with and can recommend to you.

No, the floor is not stain proof. It is more stain resistant than a regular concrete floor because the pores in the floor are closed up so tight that it keeps liquids on the surface longer looking for a way to penetrate, allowing for a longer time to respond in getting spills cleaned up. However if a liquid is left long enough on the surface stains may result. We recommend sealing your surface with Deepshield™ impregnating sealer which seals the micro pores of your polished concrete and will last for up to 10 years.

Here at Tile Cleaners® we understand the importance of your family's safety, which is why we prefer to use non-toxic finishing agents as we not only want to protect your polished concrete floors, but your families health too. Materials and agents that present potential health hazards are not in our product portfolio and never have been.

The recommended frequency for sealing polished concrete floors depends on factors such as the type of sealer used and the amount of foot traffic the floors are exposed to. Australia's Deepshield™ range of deep impregnating water-based sealers, for instance, offers long-term benefits, with Deepshield™ Gold providing protection for up to 15 years. On the other hand, topical sealers typically have a lifespan of around 3 years. However, it is important to note that high foot traffic or severe weather conditions, especially for outdoor concrete, can potentially shorten the lifespan of the sealer. Additionally, the condition of the surface plays a role in determining when resealing is necessary. If you notice patchy areas or the floors are staining easily, it may be a sign that resealing is needed. Feel free to contact us for further assistance and any inquiries you may have regarding sealing your polished concrete floors.

A matte (up to 100 grit) or even low sheen (400 grit) can be used outdoors, but polished concrete with a high sheen is not recommended.

The optimal time to seal your concrete is right after installation to provide immediate protection against staining and damage. As for determining if your concrete surfaces require sealing, there are a couple of indicators to look out for. Firstly, if you notice patchy areas on the floor where the sealant has worn off or is uneven, it is a clear sign that resealing is needed. Additionally, if your concrete is becoming more susceptible to staining and is no longer repelling liquids as effectively as before, it is a good indication that it is time to apply a fresh coat of sealer. By addressing these signs promptly, you can ensure that your concrete remains adequately protected and maintains its optimal appearance.

Efflorescence can occur on concrete and other porous surfaces when water in the concrete brings salts to the surface as it evaporates. This process leaves behind a whitish coating that can mar the finish of the concrete. Sealing the concrete with a high-quality, water-resistant sealer can help mitigate efflorescence to some extent. However, it is important to address the underlying issue causing the water penetration, such as a water pipe leak or damaged grout, in order to fully prevent efflorescence. By sealing the concrete and resolving any sources of water infiltration, you can minimize the occurrence of efflorescence and help maintain the aesthetic integrity of your concrete surfaces.

Certainly! Tile Cleaners has the expertise to remove efflorescence from concrete surfaces. Efflorescence, which is the buildup of salts, can be effectively treated using specialized cleaning techniques and efflorescence removers. It is crucial to address the underlying cause of efflorescence, which is often a leak behind the concrete or damaged grout lines. While efflorescence can be removed, it is essential to resolve the root cause to prevent its recurrence. By engaging professional services, you can have the efflorescence removed and ensure that steps are taken to rectify the underlying issue, helping to restore the appearance of your concrete surfaces.

To maintain the fresh and new appearance of your concrete surfaces, Tile Cleaners® recommends regular cleaning using a mild detergent. This weekly cleaning routine helps remove dirt and grime from the concrete surface, keeping it looking clean and well-maintained. It is important to note that strong detergents with high acidity or alkalinity can potentially affect the sealer applied to the concrete. Therefore, it is strongly advised to use mild detergents and pH-neutral substances when cleaning the surfaces. By following these maintenance guidelines, you can effectively preserve the pristine condition of your concrete and ensure its long-lasting beauty.

We recommend that you measure each concrete area separately. The simplest way to measure is by multiplying the width by the length. For example a room that is 3 meters long and 2 meters wide is 3 X 2 = 6m2 in total.

Tile Cleaning provides assistance with moving furniture during the floor sealing process. Their team of dedicated technicians is available to help with the relocation of furniture items that can be reasonably managed by one person, such as those with wheels or lightweight furniture like tables and chairs. However, it is important to keep in mind that while Tile Cleaning takes precautions to protect your belongings, they cannot be held responsible for any damages that may occur during the furniture moving process. To ensure the safety of valuable or fragile items, it is recommended to either relocate them to a secure area or properly secure them before the technicians arrive. By taking these necessary precautions, you can help ensure the safety of your furniture and minimize the risk of potential damage while the floor sealing process is being carried out.

To prepare for the concrete sealing process, it is recommended to remove all furniture and items from the floor area. By ensuring that the floor is clear and free of any obstacles, it allows the Tile Cleaning team to access the entire surface easily and carry out the sealing process efficiently. Removing furniture and items beforehand also helps to protect them from any potential damage during the sealing process. By following this simple preparation step, you can help ensure a smooth and effective concrete sealing experience.
